I tried searching and, given that its not 100% this may have already been posted..
I watched The Secret on DVD the other day. Much of it was enjoyable and interesting, but parts of it were very stupid. (At times it felt like one of those Nova movies on science that totally skews things. It was a lot of hype, special effects, and had a soundtrack to get you going.)
Basically the movie was stating that through the Law of Attraction you get what you think about and focus your thoughts on.
The parts I thought were so outlandish and irresponsible:
- Felt like it suggested you could achieve -anything-.
- The idea/suggestion that your mind can control your physiology enough to cure disease.
- The visual effects showing some sort of "wave" gush out of your body when you had a thought, as if to suggest that this was a real and physical signal that others could "tune" to and, subconsciously, become attracted to. Like pheromones on crack.
I do believe that much of the message was true-- that if you focus on what you want you are more likely to achieve it. I believe that we control most aspects of our lives and most people don't want to admit that because it admits their own shortcomings.
Most things can be controlled in our lives that are within the bounds of known technology, science and time. Things like your career, being rich, having a great body (bar incurable ailments of course), understanding difficult concepts and doing really well in, say, education like college (4.0 GPA) or just general knowledge are things we have huge influence over.
That said I still think you can't "cure" ailments with your mind nor do you send out a signal that others decode and are attracted to as the visuals of the movie would suggest. That part was pure crap.
Also the biggest problem I had with it is one of the people in the movie. The heavy black woman who had a poor self image in her past. She was toting the power of "The Secret" and saying how powerful it was. She went through some drama routine and told us her life story and how she was vulnerable before, but now she knows all about "The Secret" (and, I assume, is some sort of educator on it given the fact she was giving lots of dialog in the movie and on Oprah). She talked about personal image so much and yet was obese which led me to question how powerful "The Secret" really is if she can't do something so simple as losing weight (which, if you keep it in perspective of other tasks, is quite easy).
Anyone else see it? Thoughts?
Edit:
wiki article detailing just who the "teachers" are. Funny read on the supposed "scientists"
