I can't believe anybody is amazed or thinks they need to "learn" more about this

Life is what you make it. COMMON SENSE FTW. That'll be £20, KTHXBAI. I also just saved you a lot of time reading a pointless book, a rainforest and valuable shelf space. Next week: "Drowning:  or ?"

You should really watch the episode (can BT it). I saw the follow up one but not the first one yet. But it's more of training yourself to think in a certain way than just saying "Act Good, Be Good, duh"

Lots of people who saw the first airing of the show said it really helped them see what they were doing wrong or missing from their lives and helped them make some huge changes in their lives after only a week.

It is a self help book with obvious things that most people should already know, but the author presented it in a way that will inspire people for a little while and make the author a lot of money.

That being said it is an interesting concept although in the end faulty. Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. Trying to be a better person regardless of the circumstances though makes you a better person and have a more fulfilled/abundant life (even if you get run over by a truck the next day).

Is joining Primerica one of those huge changes?

My mom made me watch The Secret while i was staying with her last week, i had no choice b/c i had the flu. The video played out like an infomercial, saying the same thing over and over. Basically the secret is... concentrate on what you don't want, you'll make it happen... don't concentrate on what you want b/c you'll make it happen.

It was total BS. I've concentrated for years on winning the mega-lotto and i've never won. (i should start buying tickets maybe, haha)

This was a straight to DVD movie before it was a book, my Mom sent it to me swearing it was great but I still haven't even opened it yet.

I don't understand how someone could be so deficient in their own reflective thought to actually think this simple, regurgitated premise by a media darling is profound or valuable. It seems to be nothing more than an exploit on the credulity of people looking for answers to "problems" of normal life. I put it in the same category as [almost] all self-help books, astrology "predictions", etc.

That said, if it does help people, then who am I to say anything? It just seems that so many people are constantly running around looking for answers to ill-perceived problems.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=38&threadid=2009475&enterthread=y

Another thread that I started on it a few days ago.

To avoid bumping that thread I'll post here what I posted there originally:
I tried searching and, given that its not 100% this may have already been posted..

I watched The Secret on DVD the other day. Much of it was enjoyable and interesting, but parts of it were very stupid. (At times it felt like one of those Nova movies on science that totally skews things. It was a lot of hype, special effects, and had a soundtrack to get you going.)

Basically the movie was stating that through the Law of Attraction you get what you think about and focus your thoughts on.

The parts I thought were so outlandish and irresponsible:
- Felt like it suggested you could achieve -anything-.
- The idea/suggestion that your mind can control your physiology enough to cure disease.
- The visual effects showing some sort of "wave" gush out of your body when you had a thought, as if to suggest that this was a real and physical signal that others could "tune" to and, subconsciously, become attracted to. Like pheromones on crack.

I do believe that much of the message was true-- that if you focus on what you want you are more likely to achieve it. I believe that we control most aspects of our lives and most people don't want to admit that because it admits their own shortcomings. Most things can be controlled in our lives that are within the bounds of known technology, science and time. Things like your career, being rich, having a great body (bar incurable ailments of course), understanding difficult concepts and doing really well in, say, education like college (4.0 GPA) or just general knowledge are things we have huge influence over.

That said I still think you can't "cure" ailments with your mind nor do you send out a signal that others decode and are attracted to as the visuals of the movie would suggest. That part was pure crap.

Also the biggest problem I had with it is one of the people in the movie. The heavy black woman who had a poor self image in her past. She was toting the power of "The Secret" and saying how powerful it was. She went through some drama routine and told us her life story and how she was vulnerable before, but now she knows all about "The Secret" (and, I assume, is some sort of educator on it given the fact she was giving lots of dialog in the movie and on Oprah). She talked about personal image so much and yet was obese which led me to question how powerful "The Secret" really is if she can't do something so simple as losing weight (which, if you keep it in perspective of other tasks, is quite easy).

Anyone else see it? Thoughts?

Edit: wiki article detailing just who the "teachers" are. Funny read on the supposed "scientists" ;) (one being away from academic life for at least 19 years)

The energy you put into the world, both good and bad, is exactly what comes back to you
...but not necessarily in this lifetime. Sometime down the line of reincarnations.
