One's $40, one's $28. What's the difference?

Is a treadwear rating of 280 any good?
A treadware rating of 280 isn't very good. 100 is the base-line. Michelin MXV4 Plus tires (P205/65R15) run about $130 plus mounting and balancing. However, they feature an 80,000 mile warranty and a treadwear rating of 680 - which is about the hightest I've seen.

For your Prism, I'd check out Costco's tire center. The have BF Goodrich Premier tires (P205/65R15) for $58.00 (including mounting, balancing and road hazard warranty.) For your Prism, the tires are smaller and should cost less. These tires have a treadwear rating of 530 or so and feature a 65,000 mile warranty. I don't think I'd put any Kumho tires on your Prism.

those are all seasons no ?

i think rallispec wants summer tires..

summer tires are usually low profile which doesn't have much tread wear to begin with.
I'm expecting about 20k on my potenza's maybe I can get a bit more out of em but 20k i'd be satisfied.

front or rear wheel drive, if all tires similar, put best to rear, if you are going around a corner a lil too fast, and the rear tires are low on tread.... ---> *crunchola* :(

the reason i need them on such short notice is because i've got to travel 750 miles on Friday and really dont want to do that on the donut. And the overnight shipping costs on tires is crazy if i were to order tires online.

now.. another question--

I would like to get 4 new tires so i could have all of them the same... that is going to cost 600 dollars though, and i cant afford it. So only 2 for now--

is it better to put my 2 new ones on the front of the car (It is a front wheel drive car) and have the old ones in the back or put the new ones in the back and old in the front.

i assume the new ones in the front becuase that would be better for breaking.. however i dont know if putting the ones with better traction on in the back will effect turning and handling in the rain and stuff.

for a perfomance oriented tire.. .a rating of 280 is really good

standard passenger all-season tires are usually around ~350... the MVX4 Plus are only rated at 400--NOT 680.. i dont think any tire is rated that high...and if they are, they will have really really really really terrible traction

I will agree with you, 280 for a performance oriented tire is good. But, the user I was responding to has a Geo Prism, so performance tires are not in order.
I did mis-quote the rating for the MXV4 Plus tires. 400 is correct. I had been thinking about the Michelin X-One tires - and their treadware rating is actually 700. My appologies to those I may have misled with the numbers I posted for the MXV4 Plus tires. On a positive note, my local Costco sells the Michelin X-One for $102 (mounted, balanced, installed) for P205/65R15 tires. This is a hot price and about $35.00 less per tire than the competing tire shops.

However, I think I'm going for the Yokohama Avid Touring for my Taurus. $54 - delivered from DiscountTire.com and I'll pay my local Costco $9.00 to mount, balance and install them. :)

Actually, I quoted and responded to KingNothing, who was looking for tires for his Geo Prism. So, yes, all season tires would be in order.

michelins suck, i had the oem xgt v4 on my integra. i replaced them with the kumho ecsta 712 and it was a night and day difference. both wet and dry performance was amazing for tires that cost half as much as those $hitty michilins.
You're a minority when you say that Michelin tires suck. Maybe, for your use, they were not the best tires. However, Michelin makes some great, long lasting touring tires that are the perfect tires for about 90% of the cars on the road today. However, Michelins can be pricey, which I why I'm going for the Yokohama Avid Touring tires for my vehicle. They appear to offer similar performance of the Michelin touring tires, but at about 1/2 the cost.

Right, I have a Geo, and the tires I linked to are all-seasons.

Wow. That Yokohama Avid Touring tire looks pretty awesome. I have to wonder though - it has a treadwear rating of 620, so why wouldn't that mean that it's really hard and traction would suffer? That's my major complaint with my tires now - they appear to have plenty of tread left but wet traction has gone to sh!t. I mean, it is rated higher in customer reviews than a different Yokohama tire and a couple Kumho's, but I still have to wonder how they pulled that off.

I can say they suck too. After <2 years on our van, when my dad and myself were driving to Houston we noticed a faint (but getting noticeably louder) vibrating sound. We pulled over and low and behold, it looked like our right front tire had a zit that was about to blow on it. We threw on the spare and continued down to Houston. The next morning the "zit" had blown out. Not to mention the tread wore quite fast on them. We are quite happy with our Goodyear Allegra's now. (Oh and we would often have to refill the tires with air, not so with the Goodyears)

I wish I could answer that question. The reviews do seem pretty positive. Tires.Com has the great price of $54.00 (including delivery) which makes them quite attractive for my wallet and use.

You are correct. The tire guy that I spoke with at Just Tires a few weeks back did indicate that Kumho was a Korean tire.
