opinions on Kumho tires...

Rallispec

Lifer
specifically, this guy right here....

i need to get two new tires by friday and this is the only tire any place around here has in stock that will fit my wheel. The cheapest i can get them is 148, including mounting and balancing and everything.. if i was to order it, it would be 90 dollars, plus 10 or so shipping, then another 25 to get it mounted. But ordering takes too long so is out of the question.

anyhow... my dilema is this--- should i get this tire (the only one available in a 30 mile radius) or keep searching tomorrow for places further away that may have a better tire in stock. And i am on a tight budget, 150 a tire is about the most i can spend.

thoughts? has anyone used kumho tires before. are they any good? i've never used or dealt with them before.

btw-- the tire is a 215/45 17" to go on a nissan sentra se-r spec v.

Kumho tires are starting to get a better rep. However, I can't comment on your particular tire so sorry.

Are you sure that this is the only tire that you can get at such short notice?

I'm partial to Toyo Proxes TPT's which are reasonable and work great. Why are you in such a rush anyways? If possible, wouldn't it be better to wait a couple of days and get the tire you want rather than take a chance on a tire that may be good or may be bad?

Have you searched the net for Kumho tire reviews?

Those are great tires for the price. Good in wet and dry, and very "sticky". They don't last super long though. They are really good tires. 🙂

A lot of casual autocross guys I know like them because they

1. Perform pretty well
2. Cheap
3. Have good wet traction (so they don't have to switch wheels when they autocross)

If you don't care about wet traction much Kumho also makes the victoracer v700's which a lot of autocross guys like as well. Just a take a look at the scca autocross standings, many cars are using Kumho's.

I'm getting them in 205/50/15 when I get my new wheels.. 🙂

Cheap tires that are supposedly very good. I was also considering Falken Azenis, but they last 20k miles at most.. 🙁

they are really good tires... my friends had 2 sets on his SE-R (200SX SE-R, though, on 17" aftermarket wheels)... he wore it down to literally the threads (well, some anyways 😛)..they wear well and have good grip

tirerack is really really really quick in their ordering and shipping product.. so is discounttires but i dont know if they carry the kumhos

thanks for the replies 🙂

the reason i need them on such short notice is because i've got to travel 750 miles on Friday and really dont want to do that on the donut. And the overnight shipping costs on tires is crazy if i were to order tires online.

now.. another question--

I would like to get 4 new tires so i could have all of them the same... that is going to cost 600 dollars though, and i cant afford it. So only 2 for now--

is it better to put my 2 new ones on the front of the car (It is a front wheel drive car) and have the old ones in the back or put the new ones in the back and old in the front.

i assume the new ones in the front becuase that would be better for breaking.. however i dont know if putting the ones with better traction on in the back will effect turning and handling in the rain and stuff.

i used to know which end of a front wheel drive car you put new tires on if you're only doing two... for some reason i think its the rear...

I've got 225/55/16 Kumho's on my 3000GT. $79 each. Excellent tires for the money. If you buy just 2 put them on the front and the old ones on the back. You'll notice the tires on the back don't wear nearly as fast as the ones on the front.

I know a few people with 712's. they are a good tire for the money. I like their grip alot, and the tread looks sweet.
I'd try them on my car for sure too!

I've had a set of four Kumho's on my Chevy Lumina sedan for about three years. They do seem to wear out faster than other brands I've owned. These were really cheap, and I'm going to replace them soon. I'm shopping around for a new car anyway.

Right now I have Kelly brand tires on my Geo Prizm. They were there when I bought the car and must've been new since they still had the little rubber thread things sticking out. I've put about 15000 miles on the car since then, and it still looks like a decent amount of tread is left but wet/snow grip absolutely sucks anymore.

Would Kumhos be a good move for my next tire? How long could I expect them to last?

get the MX

that's what i'm gonna get to replace my Potenza's once they wear down~

I have heard good things about them.

check out the review on Tirerack.

Not if you drive in the snow.

The two Kumho-brand tires TireRack's decision guide recommends for my car

One's $40, one's $28. What's the difference?

Is a treadwear rating of 280 any good?
A treadware rating of 280 isn't very good. 100 is the base-line. Michelin MXV4 Plus tires (P205/65R15) run about $130 plus mounting and balancing. However, they feature an 80,000 mile warranty and a treadwear rating of 400. However, the Michelin X-One tires have a treadwear rating of 700 - about the highest I've ever seen.

For your Prism, I'd check out Costco's tire center. The have BF Goodrich Premier tires (P205/65R15) for $58.00 (including mounting, balancing and road hazard warranty.) For your Prism, the tires are smaller and should cost less. These tires have a treadwear rating of 530 or so and feature a 65,000 mile warranty. I don't think I'd put any Kumho tires on your Prism.

michelins suck, i had the oem xgt v4 on my integra. i replaced them with the kumho ecsta 712 and it was a night and day difference. both wet and dry performance was amazing for tires that cost half as much as those $hitty michilins.
