sounds like you got screwed if you ruined a $90 blade you paid for.
i don't know how home depot does it

I was out ~$40 for the rental, got about 1/3 of what I wanted done (used the composite blades)

The Kangas are pretty fun, I've rented the smallest one & a larger one. I need to start a landscaping business & write one off on taxes...
