Got a ticket for speeding (I-75, Ohio) on December 9. I put the ticket in my bag, kept putting off taking a look at it again.

Finally took a look at it tonight. December 22nd was the court date (no required appearance, but that's also the due date for the fine).

I took a look at the online payment system, and the fee increased (I figured that part makes sense); As a further slap in the face, it says I cannot pay online. Yet the ticket and all directions thus far stated I could.

The warnings on the back of the ticket speak of dire consequences.
Am I about to get raped by Ohio's various agencies? 😱

I'm calling tomorrow (and hoping they are open). If not, I'm shooting the court an email so I can at least demonstrate a communication attempt one day earlier, 4 days after versus 5 should look better to someone... hopefully. 😀

A warrant of arrest will issued probably for not being in court. So your are going to have to pay the fine and the fine for not appearing at court. Its a seperate offence. One is between you and the law enforcement and the other between you and the judge.
 
lol its a bloody traffic offence. It doesnt pull much weight. Anyways a warrant of arrest takes around 5 to 7 days before it gets activated so to speak. So you still got a couple of days before its signed and stamped
 
I don't *know*, but I have to think that it's somewhat common for people to miss these things and I doubt they are putting them all in jail. Your plan sounds like the best idea. If anything other than a harsher fine happens to you, that would be BS.
 
I wonder if the patrol officer ever showed up for the court appearance. I hope he did, he was kind of a dick.
I've gotten tickets (and warnings) and I never thought wrong of those other officers, especially not the ones who gave me warnings. 😀

You speaking of how he clocked my speed?

No idea. Either way, he was right on the money in regards to my speed. And I'm not the kind to fight out of things when I knowingly committed the act. I get away with some very fast speeds most of the time, I'll cough up the cash when they bust me.

Though I do need to worry about points on my license. shit forgot about that.

I got a ticket from a county sheriff on I-57 near Champaign, IL in the summer of 2002. Wasn't going to drive the three hours for court, so figured I'd mail it in. Never did.

Eight years later I got a bill from a collections agency. It was for $137 or something like that. Basically $50 more than the original ticket.

I'm sure you'll be fine.
 
I've done the same thing in Hamilton county, Ohio. They don't usually arrest you until you ignore them for awhile. Ask me how I know. If they pull you over they will just reissue you your ticket. You can get away with that a few times before they haul your ass down to county then they won't let you out until someone pays it for you. When I did it all I had to do was pay the original fine no extra consequences.

If you live out of state just mail it to them. It will clear it up after awhile warrants for traffic don't cross counties much less states. If it happened in cincinnati pm me I might be able to go pay it for you. You can paypal me the money back when its all clear.

Radar? You get the handheld. The two so called trip wires where they sit and hide behind a bush only to jump out once you crossed them. They like doing that in the country side over here. The rest is cameras. No officer pulling you over. Snapshot and the fine is in the mail. No way out of that with your big fat face on the mugshot

yeah its because they wait a week or so before signing and issuing the warrant to give you a little bit of extra time. You can escape any extra fines with a letter from your doctor lol

The website shows $137 for my fine, when the ticket information states $115. Not too bad of an increase... but I'm fearful of how high the fees might be to get this corrected.

If it's not your state of residence, it's not a huge deal. If it is your state, shit gets different I think.

Yeah I live in Lucas county, and the offence was near Findlay... (Hancock county I think...) on a regular trip down to the Cinci region. 😀

Curious if this will make it a less harsh situation to deal with?

I'm hoping when I call tomorrow, they say they will either re-enable the online payment (doubt they can though), or that it will be okay if I mail a payment that they receive this week.
 
Should be able to pay on the phone I'd think. California lets you pay online, but then of course you get a $10 convenience fee for the ability to do so, on top of the already triple fine amounts of other states (fuck this state, seriously).
 
I did something similar once... I did not read the ticket fully and never submitted payment with my not guilty plea. A warrant for my arrest was filed, so I can guarantee there will be one for you. However, they do not want to actually spend the resources to come get you... A phone call on Monday or Tuesday explaining your situation with NO EXCUSES will be just fine.
 
Heh, funny story, I met a girl a couple days ago who just spent 3.5 weeks in jail because of a 9yo traffic ticket that went unpaid. She was arrested on a warrant.

"doesn't pull much weight" can result in an automatic suspension of your driver's license. Regarding failure to appear - NH electronically issues bench warrants for that.

Why is that funny? That seems pretty fucking shitty actually. If you are a highway patrolmen please know you are a glorified meter maid.

QFT, you probably have a warrant out for your arrest. I'd get on the phone and get this straightened out pronto.

All you need is Officer Barbrady behind you at a redlight when your plate makes his wallet go *DING DING DING* then proceeds to have you end up on YouTube by witnesses filming the carnage.

The bonus is if you recover, you'd have a nice lawsuit...if not, at least your family can profit a little on the tax payer's dime.
 
I can't imagine you would get a warrant for failing to pay a speeding ticket.
You will probably get a bunch of late notices in the mail before a warrant is issued.

They were closed yesterday (figures), and I didn't get around to emailing them, figured I wouldn't get a response till today anyhow.

Turns out, when I didn't appear at court, the Judge gave a two-week extension.
I couldn't pay online because of it being past-due, but that is because the extension hadn't been applied. The extensions were just entered into the system this morning, and there is a 24-hour update window. Should be able to pay online tomorrow, without any other penalties than what appears a fair late fee (if that is indeed the discrepancy I am seeing).
