I test drove a 2001 Civic yesterday and was quite impressed. On a whim I took out a 90 horsepower (ick) TDI Golf today and was very impressed. For 90 horsepower its surprisingly fast. It's 0-60 is a bit over 11 seconds buts its bearable...kinda.

So anyway they come with so many damn options and the interior and build quality between the VW and Civic are not even comparable. Of course the VW costs more but the mileage on that little 90 horsepower is pretty damned good too...and the kicker is that they come with side air bags! Side air bags are tougher to get in Canada than in the states (not an option on a 2001 civic in canada).

Skoorb, that little 90HP engine feels a hell of a lot quicker than the numbers show. It's a torquey little bastard too.

Yeah it is, he said it has like 150 ftlbs torque at 1900. Only problem is that the thing redlines at something low like 4500 I think...The 0-60 kind of sucks but it seems to have adequate torque to drive around the city without feeling like a dork and 42/49 mpg fuel economy is something I truly can't ignore. Plus the GLS has _everything_, alarm, 8-speaker stereo, heated mirrors, cruise, power doors/windows, ABS, AC, etc. Plus side air bags :) I think I'd probabaly buy the Jetta though since its only a touch more pricey.

Welcome to the world of diesel :) It's not odd for the torque of a diesel engine to double the HP. It's all about the low end grunt.

[edit]Personally I'd go with the Golf. Lower insurance and far more useful.

The guy told me the diesel pumps less crap into the atmosphere than gas...

Why the golf though? The jetta has a bigger trunk!

You don't appreciate a hatchback until you need to use it. After that one time you'll never be without one.

You're moving in the future right? You'll be able to stick nearly double the "stuff" into that hatchback than you will in the Jetta.

Other than moving, just wait till you have to run a big box from point a to point b, or, if you want to buy something big an bulky that you have to twist and turn to fit into either the trunk or the back seat. Not a problem with the hatchback.

Cool - well that will save me about $1500 if I go with the golf. I asked about slicing cash off the MSRP he said he could do about $1000. I thought that was fairly reasonable.

I got a 2001 VW Passat GLX this past October and I love it. 190HP V6 this thing is fast as hell I love it. Decent Gas Mileage and the car has a hell of a lot of room in the trunk.

Yeah, but wait until the electrical starts going in the VW in a couple years. Like when you cannot roll down the windows or turn on your lights at night!! :Q

Well damn with 6 years or 100,000 miles full bumper-to-bumper I won't have to worry for a while!

Is that only in Canada or are you getting an extended warranty? Because last I heard, VW warranties were only 2 or 3 year...I don't remember which.

2 years/40,000 basic (with 5 year/100,000km for powertrain) or extended covers 6 years/160,000 bumper to bumper
I want an audi also, but they are more costly :)

I learned to drive on a VW Rabbit diesel. Thing had a peak of 52 or 56 HP, not sure, but it wasn?t too bad in the city. Merging on to the freeway wasn?t fun though. My family also had a Civic at the time, and you could wind the engine out for a lot more HP. My opinion was that the Honda was the overall better automobile, because it handled better and didn?t have any rattles. The VW was a loud cacophony of different interior rattles at 80,000 miles. The latest VWs are of course better than that old rabbit, but I still prefer Honda because their engines are higher-tech, and their electrical systems are more reliable than VW, and even more than Toyota, IMO.

I think diesels, esp. turbo-diesels, have more torque because they don?t have a throttle, so there?s no restriction of air into the engine. The reason their HP ratings are low is because their redlines are low. It?s a combination of torque + RPM that produce high HP ratings. There?s a precise mathematical formula that relates torque, RPM, and HP, but I don?t remember it at the moment.

Yup, those Golf's sure are torquey little beasts!
Being a fond admirer of cars with big torque, I would have no trouble driving one :D

skoorb: go out and test a GTI. its the wame as a golf but with the vr6. it has ~twice the hosrepower of that golf that you drove:) it'd be fun to drive even if you can't afford it and its premium fuel.

finally, some more people on this board are coming to appreciate VW. i have a 00 passat and i love it! i always get oohs and ahhs from people when they see it. you get sooo much for the money. compared to the new civics it's not even a competition. the civics look so plastic and cheap.

the tdi is a great engine. if you really want to learn more about them, head over to vw vortex forums and browse the TDI group. you'll find out alot about the car that i'm sure will make you very happy. if you are into performance upgrades at all, then they can be had for very little money, since it is a turbo engine. read around the VW forums, you'll learn a thing or two about the car.

I'm getting a Jetta in the summer - either a 2000 or 2001.

I'd love to get a cabrio, but I dont' think my parents want to spend that much money. :)
