how about some cheap diy route to mounting speakers... :/

doesn't have to be so pretty, in college!

I bought some 16 gauge and routed through the walls. People have said a nail is sufficient to hold these speakers, although I used a small drywall anchor -- little plastic insert with a screw in it. Can't remember the size, but sizes are color-coded and mine are yellow. The anchors came with screws, but the screw heads were too big to fit into the slots on the speakers, so I had to buy the next smaller wood screw. Worked like a charm.

wasn't it a bear to route the cables through the walls?

Yeah, it was tough, BUT it looks soooo sweet, with the surrounds and backs just "floating" on the walls....no wires, no stands, no nothin'.

Ok I am sure I will get flamed for this - but figure i'll ask anyway.

I have an existing 2.1 bose cube set with passive sub.

My thought (because of space issues and the fact that my room is really way too small for the 7.1 setup.) is that I might go ahead and use the bose stuff as my rears.

Simply have the rear chan. go through the passive sub...so I have a semi 5.2 setup - with the rear sub only getting the rears info...I know they wont get passed much in that range anyway - but might add a little kick to the explosions going on behind.

Also - they look a lot better and will provide better directionality to my rears becuase I am in a corner viewing situation and there really isnt much space for the onkyo satellites.

Anyway any thoughts concerns ideas would be great. Thanks

Yeah, that should work if the passive sub has two inputs for speaker wire sets and the satellites are connected through the sub.

Also, if you're not going to use half the Onkyo speakers, you might want to think about just getting a receiver, a sub, and three speakers individually instead of a package.

I got the set for $279. And the reciever has everything I really wanted - sub is good too...and the fronts / center sound (well lets not lie...crappy at best - but they will get the job done)

Couldnt really argue with the price.

Ohh...and yeah the bose set hooks up just as you described - passive sub with 2 inputs / 2 outputs.

I could still use 2 of the onkyo speakers and go with a 7.2 setup but dont really know if I need those side speakers.

Ok, I don' get this. Why are there so many websites saying that this is as good of a HTIB as you can get yet there are many people saying that the speakers are pretty much crap? Is it cause HTIB are pretty much all garbage and this one just doesn't suck as much?

This isn't the best HTIB you can get, but it's a good set for the price.

Just like computers / cars / whatever, there is a wide range of what you can spend of HT stuff.

I would classifly my HT set as midrange, and if everything was bought without sale prices / combo specials etc, it would be about $4500.

There's no difference between speakers that come in a HTIB set as you can buy individually, just that the HTIB sets have to fit a receiver, 5 or more speakers, and a sub into whatever price point they're aiming for.

Not everyone wants to spend a few thousand dollars or more on a HT set, and these HTIB sets are certainly better than stock tv speakers etc.
So it comes down to "you get what you pay for", but this one is one of the better ones at this pricepoint.

Well...i got mine last night.

And the reciever is borked. Not 100% sure whats up but I'll be calling tech support later today.

The left front speaker has really garbled sound - it sound like it is blown...but the speakers are fine. I tested each front on the left - each sounded fine when on the right - but left sucked.

The speaker wire was even changed out just to make sure - same problem. So...its back to onkyo it will go I assume - what a waste of time. Well at leastI have the rest of the system wired and ready to go.

Was yours new or refurbished? Which store did you buy it from?

Damn! I had the same problem, but no advance RMA for me!!! Boo!

I shipped it back with their label on Saturday (11 days ago) and still have no speaker.

Can't get thru on the phone to get a status either.
