The thing is, he also pans a number of indie artists, including some that are rather obscure by today's standards (Bad Brains, Husker Du). I imagine he, like me, is likely a native Minnesotan, since he mentions Husker Du and calls the Replacements the 'Mats, a bit of an insider Minnesotan thing to say (it is an abbreviated version of "Placemats").

I would go as far as to say that I think a number of his picks (again, "Paul's Boutique" really jumps out at me) are essential albums for anyone under 40 who enjoys modern music at all.

I think that's part of the goal of the list. Many people hang on to musically shabby or trite collections because of nostalgia or peer popularity. This list is full of hyperbole, and you guys who are getting so up-in-arms about it seem to be missing that.

The albums on the list aren't ones that are categorically bad, these are the ones that for some reason or other seem to be widely considered "seminal" or "must-haves" and looking back, they just aren't that great. I actually own very few of the albums on the list, but I guess I "get it" because it did motivate me to flip through my CD collection and look at some of the tired albums that in my earlier stages of musical development I really considered to be outstanding, but nowadays they hardly get a spin, and to ask myself why.

His comments on "Stairway To Heaven"/"Smells Like Teen Spirit" are spot-on--it's not that great a song, yet it continues to be interwoven with "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Bungle In The Jungle" ad nauseum on your local ClearChannel classic rock ship, while countless other actually good songs never get play. 20 years from now, the 40-something camp is going to hear Teen Spirit and their eyes will glaze over with memories of their flannel shirts and moshing while drunk in the high school gym, while the younger generation wonders just why it was considered such a high-ranking work.

Looks like this was the criteria:

1. Critically bullet-proof artifacts whose weighty presence on the shelf is complimented perfectly by their perpetual absence from the CD player. Critic-mandated vanity archives should be bundled up and spirited off to the used record store under the cover of night.

2. Albums by new artists that have only their newness and the marketing efforts of music conglomerates to recommend them. Almost invariably, these recordings pale in comparison to those of the artists they imitate. Alternately, new albums by established artists that are slavishly hailed as the big comeback get high points with us. Like nature hates a vacuum, Jaguaro despises the Next Big Thing.

3. Nostalgic favorites that maintain their place by tradition and neglect more than actual merit. These are the CDs people never get rid of because they may want to play them some time in the indefinite future (certainly not now).

I know a ton of CDs that fall into categories 1 and 3 - and as much I think Boston's first album is awesome (along with many others)...I haven't actually listened to it in a long, long time...probably could go and *maybe* in a few years I'd say, "Hey, where's that CD?" ... maybe.
