The toothbrush is my limit, but the tongue scraper is just a disgusting gunk-collecting mess. I would barely be able to use my own tongue scraper, which is one reason I don't have one.

PSA:

Something I discovered in the past few years that I doubt many people know about is that food particles can get trapped in your tonsils. There are a lot of little crevices back there that can accumulate food. This can create really horrible bad breath even if you've brushed, tongue scraped (although I just brush my tongue vigorously), flossed, and used Listerine.

What I did was get an irrigator from my dentist (like the kind they give you when you have your wisdom teeth out) and a flashlight and squirted that crap out. Instantly the bad breath was gone. I think this is the 4th thing that many people miss in their quest to eliminate bad breath. I typically do it 2 or 3 times per week, or whenever I feel stuff may be trapped back there.

Other things that I've found help are drinking plenty of water, especially after meals, and brushing/flossing after every meal.

Not everyone gets tonsilloliths, but good for you to bring up this information anyway.

If you require a tongue scraper in order to keep your breath under control, you should see a doctor. Also, one of the best things you can do to keep your breath fresh is to drink plenty of water. No need for tongue scrapers. Also, WTF are you using your GF's tongue scraper for? That kind of stuff you don't share dude.

wrong.

plaque grows on your tongue just like it does on your teeth. some have it worse than others for various reasons. if i were to do a smear from a scraping of your tongue it would be loaded with bacteria even if you drank a gallon of water a day.

Um.. HELLO... insufficient saliva is one of the main causes of bad breath. Do some Googling and see for yourself. The research is there and very clear. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps the issue considerably. A dry mouth with minimal saliva is a breeding ground for bacteria. This is also why experts do not recommend mouthwash for bad breath as they contain alcohol, which dries out the mouth making the situation worse.

i realize all of that, but what you fail to realize is you STILL will have a bacteria laden tongue even if you do all the "recommended" things. as i've said, it can be worse due to certain conditions, but no mouth is plaque free.

fyi, not all mouthwashes/rinses contain alcohol.

do you know of a remedy whereby you can skip brushing and flossing too?

Who is saying anything about having a bacteria/plaque free tongue/mouth? My point is simple: If you require a tongue cleaner in order to have your breath under control, you have diet/health issues you need to address. And second, water and lots of it is your friend in terms of helping to keep your mouth clean. Bacteria is normal... you will never rid yourself of it. If you have gotten to the stage where you need a tongue cleaner to have acceptable breath, you have got serious problems going on in your mouth, mostly as a result of what you put in your mouth. Wow, I've seemed to have touched a sensitive subject with you. Yikes.

I just use one of the three seashells to scrape my tongue. It's clean but my breath still smells like ass.

Once you've had the opportunity to have sex with an actual girl, I'm fairly sure your opinion will change.

What's the purpose of scraping your tongue? Just bad breath? Personally my breath has never been very bad unless I'm sick. I think drinking only water/juice, eating lots of vegetables, and eating meat only in moderation probably helps a lot with that.

Or you could scrape your tongue. =/

I just got one 2 weeks ago. It is amazing. However, I "figured" out that the layer of crap on my tongue was causing some of the bad breath years ago, and have been scraping it off almost daily with my finger nails. The scraper just makes it way easier;).

I believe mosh works in the dental industry, so she probably knows what she's talking about.

People, Dentist here. Nothing wrong with using a tongue scraper everyday. Brushing tongue works too. Remember, gotta get plaque levels down. Soda creates an acidic environment for more bacteria. There is such thing as normal bacteria such as gram + but you don't want gram neg bacteria around. S. Mutans, P. gingivalis, I can go on and on... If you have any problems with bad breath, go see your dentist. There are situations where it's not caused by the tongue. Also, you can have the top of the line electric toothbrush and still have plaque. It's how diligent you are in the process. When you see Brooke shield's in the commercial, that's not the way you are supposed to brush! I cringe when I see that commercial.

I don't really think thats disgusting at all.
I'm disgusted that you don't think it's disgusting.
I'd have no problem using my wife's scraper, if she had one. We use our toothbrushes and we each have our own.

I always pick up an extra tongue scraper when I'm at the dentist. Sonicare, floss, tongue scraper, listerine, done.
