Enigma. Not really a band as you would refer to, but I have NO clue what music they are making now.
Yeah, I had their new CD, but it was no more than perhaps 4 years ago...still, quite a while.

The Cure hasn't come out with anything in some time either ;)

No, but they're co-headlining with Radiohead at Cochella (big west coast music festival), and that's worth something. Not that I like them.

Pipe. Crack. Down. Now.

They're hated by people who aren't and never were true fans. They're hated by people that think musicians are some sort of personal musical entertainment slave. They're hated by people that don't understand musicians are just normal people like you and I that do what they want; what feels good. They're hated by people that don't understand what Metallica is all about.

afvckingmen. Couldn't have put it better. I didn't feel like arguing with the people in this thread who think that a band sucks if it doesn't conform to their narrow musical tastes but since you've seen fit to do so I can't help but agree with you ;)

 for people who approach a bands new offering with an open mind and don't remain tied to what they've heard in the past. Stagnation sucks. If they'd never progressed from the MOP/AJFA days people would bitch about that too. Go figure.
Exactly.

It's a case of "You can't make everybody happy.". Nomatter how many people like your music, there will always be people that don't.

Christ, they were accused of selling out with Ride the Lightning and Fade to Black. The words are meaningless to them now.

Just because you don't like it doesen't mean it sucks, it means that you don't like it.. I realized that a long time ago. It's amazing what you will hear in songs that you've never really listened to before, if you just give them a chance.

There are some incredibly awesome and fast riffs in St. Anger. I don't particularly care for the album, but it's their musical vision, not mine.

At times I add Supertramp in my playlist, their Breakfast in American album is great.
I have yet to find a Karaoke bar that has Goodbye Stranger in their list.

danny~!

Hey I'm a huge Floyd fan and I'll even agree w/ you on that one. The Wall marked the beginning of their demise... I'd say it's simultaneously one of their best and worst albums, and then after Final Cut (pretty quiet and meh, but still not royally bad) when Waters left they just sounded like Kenny G $hit to me (Learning to Fly - Worst. Song. Ever). So now you have Waters doing his own stuff who gives uninspired over polished/practiced concerts and the other Floyd guys still under the name doing crap.

Some of the bands mentioned will probably enjoy some sort of revival when their fans get older and become nostalgic for the memories of their youth. The Monkees are an examples of this.

Nope I still like Korn, as far as metallica goes, yes I didn't like most (not all) of the songs on the new album, that said, I went to see them in LA recently and they f'n rocked. They played a ton of old stuff and the crowd was totally into the show. So don't tell me how much they suck and have faded away cause that is BS.

Also saw the Foo Fighters last year and they had an awesome show also. The newest album is pretty damn good.

I think alot of you people's answers are way off the mark.

Well, I certainly won't claim they owe me or anyone else anything, nor will I bitch about the whole Napster thing, they are of course free to do whatever they like.
I just don't like the direction they've taken, and I've been extremely disapointed with them for some time now.

Not just cause of StAnger, which I feel is by far their worst album yet, but because I think they are selling out.
Touring with nu-metal crap like Slipknot, Linkin Park, POD, etc, WTF is up with that? Those bands don't belong in the same sentence as Metallica, or at least they didn't use to.

So, my list of bands:
Metallica
Guns 'n Roses
Skid Row
Anthrax

As long as Metallica includes older songs on their playlist they still will be a great show to see.

I SERIOUSLY hope you aren't this blind.

Metallica hasn't produced a quality musical record in years. It isn't that I hate Metallica or anything like that. They have just lost their touch. Simply put, they got OLD. They tried to keep up with the music scene and couldn't.

When Metallica was making St. Anger, they continuously said, "Some of our new songs sound like _________". Put a underground metal band in the blank. They stated Meshuggah along with tons of other bands. They weren't trying to be original. They were trying to capture what other bands had done and imitate it. They don't have a creative thread left in their collective bodies.

They know it and anyone who listens to their cds know it.

Once again, I won't accuse them of selling out because they seem to actually think St. Anger is old school back to their roots metal. It is just a fact that they got too old and couldn't create something original if it fell in front of them.

Metallica used to be all about pushing the edge. Now they look to other bands to imitate.

Great White was always a kind of club band that got lucky (though I love 'em!), same with most of the 80's bands.

Aerosmith nearly didn't come back from their drug induced haze. I'm glad they did tho...

Van Halen has absolutely fallen. They got lucky with Sammy Hagar, but after losing him, just a pile of brotherly poop.

Those are off the top of my head. If I sit down to think about it, I'm sure I could come up with more.
Rolling Stones, are you serious? Fallen from grace?!?!? You gotta be kidding me. Show me another band of 60 year old freaks that sells out venues like they do.

So just because you think Metallica doesn't suck means they don't suck? In your own definition then nothing in the world sucks and the word "sucks" has no meaning. I'll give the fact that Metallica is musically talented (coming from a guitar player) and so will my guitar/drum playing cousins, but they suck, and not just because of the Napster thing. You can take the greatest guitarist, bassist, drummer, and singer of all time and put them together and have the most talented band ever, but it doesn't mean sh!t if their music sucks. I'm not in any way saying they have the best G/B/D/S because they have no one that qualifies for any of those positions, but I can't think of any saving grace to keep Metallica from the "became crap" category.
