This worries me a lot less than the active distortions Texas already mandates, like basically writing Thomas Jefferson out of history.

Are there actually any Islamic references in grade & high school these days? It's been many a year since I was in school but I remember-at best-one or two brief positive remarks about unnamed Isalmic scholars in alegbra and medicine when Europe was going through the Dark Ages, and a generally negative discussion of Islam when the Crusades and Moorish invasion of Spain was discussed.

Here in the US we have a pretty strong western civ bias to our education and barely touch on anything not from ancient Greece and Rome, England or the USA-at least that's my impression.

Fortunately we all are born with the ability to learn outside of school, in any event.

wtf are you blabbering about? did you even fucking read the link or what other people have said? let me guess you just read the OP title and his bullshit so you jump on the bandwagon of OMGWTFBBQ TEXANS ARE BIGOTS!!! THEY ARE ERASING THE HISTORY OF ISLAM!!! HOW DARE THEY DO SUCH A HATEFUL THING!!! THOSE BASTARDS!!!

And that makes so much sense because in the US Islam is so often portrayed as 'good' and Christianity as 'bad'. Oh wait... o_O

Did you read any of the articles? The textbooks in question are older and were written before the recent US islamic hate phenomenon. Someone recently read through these textbooks and charges that islam was made to look better than christianity in the history books by using "bad" facts for christianity and "good" facts for islam.

That's irrelevant. Books become history the instant the ink hits the page. If I look at a magazine the first thing I look at is the date on it so I know how old the 'news' is.

I confess I didn't read the articles-I was merely relating what I was taught in school (in New England in the 60's) about Islam, which was damn little.

My main point is never, ever depend on one source for all your education and information. In my day there was the library, newspapers, weekly news magazines, Walter Chronkite and Huntley & Brickley for alternative sources. These days there are exponentially more sources. Always keep an open mind to new ideas and new information.

The article is thin on details... but if all they did was put the discussion of Islam on par with the discussion of Christianity it's hard to see a problem. Ideally neither would not be discussed in most if not all classes.

If you still agree with said article, that's just fine by me, but no reason to get into all this ridiculous insulting rhetoric. Especially no reason to call me a troll, sheesh. The immaturity and dramatic outrage on this board is always good for luls though. :p

Yep, Garfield is a pretty rabid poster who likes to insult whenever possible.

The Arabs invented algebra. I guess we don't need math books beyond 6th grade anymore.

Arabs != Islam. I notice it's more frequently people who consider themselves as tolerant who keep making this mistake even though it has the effect of perpetuating ethnic stereotypes.

that's just silly. there is a lot of rich history in the Muslim world of "ancient times". how the fuck are they going to explain the history of math without referencing Islam?

Algebra etal is in spite of Islam not because of it. Hard to invent anything when total regulation of life and explanation of the universe is practiced. Same goes for Christianity aka dark ages.

Inshallah fatalism leaves you in tents and caves not inventing and creating .....accidents of geology (oil) not withstanding.

The region of the world in question was overwhelmingly islamic at the time in question.

It is not a stereotype.

You can't embarrass folk who have no organic shame. Folk were deeply shamed as children and have grown impregnable defenses as a result. Folk who can't feel their shame get in your face. Thier focus is on hurting others.

Why do you even need to introduce ethnicity into this topic? It's about religion. And you're not even being accurate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_ibn_Musa_al-Khwarizmi

Dude was Persian, not Arabic. Does one have to point that out to teach Algebra? Hardly.

For fucks sake...

Alright, people of middle eastern descent came up with the foundations of modern algebra.

Do you have to point out that they were middle eastern? Did anyone learn about him in high school? I bet not. Why do you think that is?

Islam is only 1400 years old and is a refashioning of earlier abrahamic religions. Essentially islam was founded arounded 600ad.

So islam has nothing to do with algebra and other anceint arabic cultuers that were often multitheistic.

Come on. Do you really think they'd be intelligent enough to distinguish "Arab" from "Muslim"?

Considering it was founded around 800CE?

The fact is that Islamic (and Indian) scholars achieved an incredible amount in mathematics and science in the late 1st and early 2nd millennium. Texas schools would be doing their students a disservice to ignore this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_mathematics

How is snubbing Islam a disservice to them?

I'll get straight to the point and say that I'm not in favor of white washing it, but history and mathematics are different lessons entirely. Being ignorant of the exact details of what occurred a thousand years ago will have ZERO effect on their math lessons.

Texas? I always figured that somewhere between the heat, humidity, moonshine, old time fundie religion, the mythos of the Texas Rangers and the Lost Cause that they're terminally whacked out.

I doubt that the Mexicans would take 'em back if they begged... too nuts.
