Onboard audio not working?

Mr Bob

I have an ASUS P4P 800 Deluxe Motherboard with the onboard 5.1 sound.

My onboard audio is going to my Denon receiver using the Ext and it no longer works. I just recently disconnected the sound, and plugged it back in about 1 week later. All of a sudden it isn't working.

The front speakers come on fine, however the rear, sub, and center do nothing.

I have SounMAX as my audio device, and setup the 5.1 configuration using that.

First, any suggestions to fix this.
Second, any suggestions on a decent sound card? NewEgg has the Audigy2 ZS Gamer for $71 AR > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102171
Lastly, is it ok that my speakers are directly next to my computer tower? I have very nice infinity speakers.

Sitting next to the pc shouldnt be a problem. It should be good and insulated with the case. Providing its aluminum and not steel. A good sound card is an audigy, however, drivers are buggy and always have been for the creative products. If you dont mind spending the money... i would look into a M-audio sound card... you will absolutely love it if you use your pc for alot of music around the house. Quality is awesome i hear.

"My onboard audio is going to my Denon receiver using the Ext"

What does that mean?

EDIT: oh, and of course you're using a signal that's not just stereo to check this, right? (like not music)

The onboard audio on my MB has 3 outputs on the actual MB, it is being connected to my receiving using the standard Y cable into the back of my receiver using Ext.

Yes. I have my SoundMAX Configured in the 5.1 setup (I went through the wizard).

Source as in you're listening to a DVD or a 5.1 game and not music to test if it's working.

If you have a pair of headphones or a set of regular computer speakers, try plugging them into the individual jacks on the soundcard to see if each one is producing a signal.

I tested it using some music and a 5.1 surround sound game. Before (when it was working) it would play music in surround.

If I plug headphones into the center/sub and the surround/rear jacks, I should be able to hear something. If I don't hear something, there is a problem with either the setup wizard, or the actual hardware on the MB. If I do hear something, it is a problem with my receiver.

Is this correct?

Could you tell me the results of your music and 5.1 test before moving on?

So music is stereo... 5.1 game = what?

I see that music isn't surround, but is gaming working?

Ill test it after classes today. 5.1 game = Need for Speed - Underground 2, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor.

Thanks!

On board sound will not give surround on Music through the likes of Winamp unless you have a plugin . Windows Media will do it by way of taxing the CPU. I see you already understand why you have no money so why not get up off your wallet and get a card? 😉

What connection are you using for the reciever? Analog or digital?
Which input is the reciver set to?
Ext is the reciever's setting for External Input. It is analog only, with no processing by the reciever.

Example:
Denon DVD-2900, Denon AVR-2802

For CD, DVD-A, SACD, I use Input = CD, set to Ext. In. This is fed by 6 analog cables.

For DVD, same player, I use Input = DVD, set to Digital, assigned to Optical1, DD/DTS detection Auto.

For audio from the PC, I use Audigy 2 ZS -> Input = VDP, assigned to Coaxial1, DD/DTS detection Auto

I am using the Ext In (with the 3 Y cables). I have the 3 jacks on my computer, and each one goes to the correct spot on the receiver under Ext.

I just now plugged my headphones into each jack and turned on the sound (using the audio wizard sound test), I could only hear the front speakers (the blue jack in the middle). So this would mean that the issue is with the onboard audio, correct?

In my other thread, someone mentioned that I should just grab http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829120103 and use the optical input. It comes to around $30 after the card + cables + shipping, so it seems worth it.

Yeah, this is a soundcard problem then.

Double check that all your settings are on 5.1 (change it to 2.1 and then change it back to 5.1), check the game sound settings, check windows speaker configuration, try reinstalling your onboard sound drivers.

If you're going to get a digital card, that will be the end of your 5.1 in games unless you get a card that does Dolby Digital Live (DDL). The Chaintech will give you stereo for music, games, and anything else that isn't encoded in Dolby Digital ahead of time. That means that DVDs are going to be just about the only thing that's going to be a 5.1 signal out.

If you want 5.1 from games too, an X-Mystique will be able to encode the sound into a 5.1 digital stream. There's a sale on them somewhere and you can get one for about $80 I think (chech hot deals).

Alternatively you could get another analog card and use the 6 channel direct input again.

This may be obvious and yoyo has already mentioned it but double check the windows and sound util speaker settings, on my desktop I find it reverts back to 2.0 speakers every once in a while for no particular reason. There are usually a couple places to check and they dont always agree with each other, so just because one setting says 5.1 doesnt mean the others do.

Sorry your sound card has pooped out on you. On the other hand, time to buy new stuff, yay! I'll be getting an X-Mystique soon, I think it's a solid product.

- This is something I do NOT want to happen. I love my surround sound!!!!

What would be the benefits with the X-Mystique over a standard pci card using the Ext in on my receiver?

A good reason to consider it is because it's the best non-Creative sound card for video games. Also, the analog performance should be among the leaders in signal quality. If you ever want to go with a digital connection to a reciever, this will accomodate nicely.

As always, let your ears decide what sounds best.
