I heard that the Iphone was slow... Edge network is slower then dial up... What I heard... What if you hack this on your own carrier like say Sprint can it go faster or are you still stuck at slow speeds?

Or did I miss something and the speed is now faster?

Thanks!

EDGE isn't slower than dial-up. I believe that AT&T did some EDGE optimizations right around when the iPhone came out and people usually get around 144-200Kbps now. That's still a far cry from HSDPA or EVDO.

No, the iPhone will only work on GSM networks. I believe the only two left in the US after this current round of aquisitions ends is AT&T and T-Mobile. AT&T is buying Edge Wireless and T-Mo is buying Suncom, IIRC.

Sprint and Verizon work on CDMA technology.

Edge speed varies based on area, my buddy has an iphone, and although wifi is certainly faster, the edge speeds are nothing to cry about. It is certainly faster than dialup, maybe... double the speed?

Also, Sprint uses a CDMA network, the iphone is GSM, they are not compatible at all.

And even if Sprint was GSM, the iphone doesn't have a 3G chip, so i can only go as fast as edge.

If I have a family plan (2-lines) with T-Mobile, do I have to add T-Zones to both lines for $12, or can I just add it to the one line the iPhone is on?

Also, how do you tell T-Mobile you have a new phone (which happens to be an iPhone they don't officially support)? Or do you need to at all if you are replacing an old device without adding a line?

Mine shipped yesterday and I should be receiving it tomorrow. Stoked!

Question for you veterans of unlocking it. I'm currently with AT&T and want to stay with them, I just don't want to sign a contract again. I heard with ziphone, when you select do-it-all, it downgrades the boot loader which voids your warranty. Is this an issue, is there any way to reverse this if I ever wanted to sign a contract with AT&T or I had a faulty unit? I'm just concerned I would be SOL if the iPhone breaks due to hardware issues.

Thanks!

Yeah this deal was posted all over the net pretty fast. They must've had a lot thought because they didn't run out until about 3:30ish PM EST.

Mine will be here tomorrow for use on T-Mobile. Bye bye POS Shadow. 😀

Are new models supposed to come out in June or something?

I actually had T-Mobile in mind. If it is only $6 for unlimited web access, I think I am in.

Another stupid question: With the T-Zones and the iPhone, can you actually browse web sites as if on a mini-laptop (like checking webmail, Google Maps etc.)? I am a total newb as far as mobile Internet goes.

Well... there is mobile internet and mobile internet.

There is the mobile internet that every other cell phone and most smart phones have. They have a crappy browser, usually only capable of handling 1 page at a time, with stripped down features, and the page is hard to navigate and read due to the screen size. Even my old PDA, which was pretty decent to surf the web on, is crap compared to the iphone.

Now, you have the mobile internet that the iphone uses. It can go to any site on the web, and with the exception of flash and java, will display everything there. You can easily zoom in, scroll around and everything. Navigating and reading the page is almost as easy as a large desktop screen.

Nothing official, but I would hate to buy an iPhone now and have them release one in June, y'know? If June hits and there isn't a new model, I'll be buying one for sure!

Well, too bad it's gone. 🙂
