On the fence for an iPhone? 8gb Refurbs now $249 at AT&T.com

Ooh, that is a really great price. I would love a 16GB, but I have already decided that if I can only get the cash together for an 8GB, i would get that. And for half the price of a new 16GB.... i think i know where most of my next paycheck is going to, so long as they are still around.

Just bought one of these and debating on if I should buy another one to sell for some $$$... must... fight... greed...

sigh...damn you verizon for letting Apple slip through.. your stupid VCast had nothing on the possibilities of the iPhone. Although, I don't quite understand why Apple asked verizon first, given GSM is a far larger market around the world (or is it pretty simple for them switch between the two, if they could?)

Thinking about an iPhone from all the new software announcements, but I'm going to be cool about it and see what Android offers. Guess I'll be sticking with my Treo 700wx a bit longer and not switching out for the 800w when it hits.

Yes, but in the US, CDMA has a significantly greater build out. The whole CDMA vs GSM thing is almost dead. Damn near everybody is switching to WCDMA for 4G.

This doesn't require you to activate or do anything online when you purchase it?

It looks like you can just add the phone to cart and do everything once it arrives (during activation). Does this, technically, mean that you can just order the phone for $249.99, and unlock it without being tied into anything, or do they get you somewhere during the checkout process?

activation is done via itunes. so you never have to actually activate it.

yeah, the US market is heavily vested in CDMA, but since Apple went worldwide fast, it doesn't seem to make sense. Or maybe the worldwide rollout was because they didn't go CDMA.

As for switching to 4G... everyone but the US.. ha.. we're so behind...

I bought one this morning. The only things they ask you are the standard things whenever you buy something online (Name, Address, CC#, etc). When you get the phone, you are asked to enter a SSN# for credit check purposes but you can bypass this by entering 999-99-9999. From there you can unlock and do whatever else.

Edit apparently there are several methods for unlocking this phone so look around. Best tutorials I've seen are at http://i.unlock.no

Well, I'm in for one - I've been on the fence for awhile, but this is enough to do it for me, especially when it doesn't require me to go to a store and deal with the hassle. Does anyone know what kind of shipping they use, and if it requires a signature?

I would love to order two, one for me and one for my wife, but does anyone know how much extra unlimited texting costs? Right now we pay about $130/mo for Verizon with 1400 Minutes, Unlimited In Texting, Mobile Web, and VzNavigator.

On Apple's site it says that you only get 200 SMS messages with ALL the iPhone plans, which is ridiculous! This might make me wait until the chat clients are out in June.

Well if you're planning on using AT&T they say this...

AT&T says...
To use iPhone, you'll need to sign up for a 2-year service agreement or a renewed 2-year service agreement if you're an existing AT&T wireless customer.

The plans start at $59.99 and include Visual Voicemail and Unlimited Data with both email and web plus texting. You can browse the Internet and send emails as often as you like without being charged extra. You'll choose your plan during the activation process.

Click on the link to the phone the OP put and pick the Activation tab.

Yea, I saw that.. it doesn't list an exact price breakdown. I guess I'm going to have to call to find out exactly what I'd be paying. But it's just ridiculous that they expect you to buy the phone before they tell you what/how much their plan will be when you're on their network.

Ouch! Their texting plans are expensive. They don't even offer free texting between AT&T users, which Verizon offers. Oh well.. such is life. I'll wait until June and then maybe I won't need texting and I can just IM back and forth to people.

Yeah another thing holding me off from an iPhone is having to switch from Sprint. No one can really touch $30/mo for 500 minutes, N&W @ 7, unlimited data and unlimited text messaging.

Data plan pricing is probably the ONLY reason I've stayed with Sprint for 10 years. Otherwise I would have jumped ship to a GSM provider long ago so I could get cool new WinMo phones.

If you get good service Sprint is THE best price to feature ratio.

I really want to hold off until June anyway, just because I know that I'll be buying it twice if I don't. They might not release a new version, but if I buy now and they do, my wife will kill me in my sleep.. 😀

Quick question. If I buy one of these as an upgrade for my current phone, can I just use my existing SIM card after activation? Thanks.

If you use it on another carrier's network, will you be able to access the Internet? What kind of plan would it require?

With T-Mobile, you can actually use T-zones which is the $5.99 internet plan. You'll have to edit some settings but it works and it's unlimited.

I actually had T-Mobile in mind. If it is only $6 for unlimited web access, I think I am in.

Another stupid question: With the T-Zones and the iPhone, can you actually browse web sites as if on a mini-laptop (like checking webmail, Google Maps etc.)? I am a total newb as far as mobile Internet goes.

Could anyone tell me if this would work correctly? I want to add an iPhone on to my family plan, but I don't want to have to extend the plan further.

Get another line added to family plan and get a free AT&T phone. Buy iPhone, unlock it using this guide.
Take SIM card out of free phone and put it in iPhone.

But by adding another line to the family plan, that line will have a 2 year contract. The only thing that scenario might avoid is the iPhone Data Plan, but the iPhone isn't very useful without data.
