On the budget, Obama has Republicans cornered

Washington (CNN) – Furloughed jobs, interrupted services, and the potential economic ramifications aside, top Republican strategist Karl Rove is warning a government shutdown is likely to strengthen President Obama's hand as he heads into his reelection campaign.

"While the government shutdowns didn't jeopardize Republicans' hold on Congress, they helped President Clinton position himself for a successful 1996 reelection," concludes Rove. "President Obama's ratings as a strong leader have slipped this year…Republicans should be careful not to let him recover as he gears up for his 2012 reelection campaign."

Karl Rove agrees with the OP. The ball is in Repub's court now. Remove the stupid abortion rider and it gets approved. Or they can boost Obama's rating with a shutdown.

The idea that Obama has outwitted anyone in his life is hysterical. The Republicans are in control here and they are going to use this opportunity to stop funding un-American things that like Obamacare, increased fruits and vegetables in school lunches and the EPA. 😎

I suppor the reduction of entitlement benefits, i support the increase of taxes on the extremely wealthy. Why cant we do both....

Oh, how about that abortion!? we serioisly need to just outlaw it or legalize it and never ever let it be legislated on again. Its the biggest thorn in our political side and the ONLY thing that divides us 50/50

Yea. I guess you forgot he got elected, he passed comprehensive health care when a dozen presidents couldn't, and he got an 850 billion stimulus passed.

And his popularity is pretty high for 3rd year president.

we will do both, but probably not til we're on the brink. For all the angst, we're not even close.

Isn't this the new political game in town:

If the tax code should be set to 90's levels because that is when the economy prospered and the government reduced their debt...

Well then by the same logic, one can reason the government shutdown in 1995 is also what led to the great economy and reduced government debt!

We should embrace the shutdown of the government!

I'm not sure, but he sure did hoodwink millions of people into thinking he was going to "change" the country. Does that count?

You know what outwit means. That's all I pointed out. I said nothing about his policies.

As to popularity, a really quick look led to these figures, Im sure there's other numbers so Im not saying this is definitive.

Reagan's 3rd year, Jan, 1983, popularity 34%
Obama's 3rd year, March 2011, popularity 52%

It's all a sideshow to avoid talking about reforming/cutting SS, Defense, and Healthcare where all the real money is being spent. Neither party wants to address this since they both run up against their base voting blocs .

All this angst over a few billion in discretionary spending is like doctors fretting over a scraped knee while the patent bleeds out of his femoral artery.

fuck. it's abortion again. seriously?

Well if we take a page from recent history... whenever the Republicans blocked a spending bill which contained unrelated amendments that they disagreed with, it was the Republicans' fault. (Party of NO!)

So, we can at least be consistent. The Democrats are now the Party of NO!

Please don't fall for libtard propaganda. Abortion is just one of many issues holding this up (though it is the biggest problem facing our country today). The rest can be seen here:

ALL of the issues have to do with the House not providing a clean bill to keep the government operating.

They're injecting political issues into a procedural matter.

It's the House's right to do so. But it's also their problem if people don't approve.

They'll cave. With or without a shutdown. So all the shutdown will do is waste money and inconvenience people.

It's a no win for GOP at this point. They have allowed themselves to be painted as anti-abortion extremists holding up a budget to cram their social agenda down America's throats. Independents, especially women, won't stand for this. Abortion aside, lots of women either get a lot of preventative and reproductive care done at PP now, or they have gotten it done there when they were young, so they know how important it is.

YOU made the claim. YOU need to back it up.

No I don't. You don't have to believe me, whatever the facts are, they will remain facts.

You can say I'm wrong, but if you don't check the facts, you can't know if that's accurate.

Whichever one of us want's to, can post supporting facts. I already said I don't care enough about this point.

Its not only abortion but also health care bill riders, weaken the EPA riders, etc...

Its a bunch of junk that has little to nothing to do with the budget.

The tea party already gave Reid another 6year when he should have lost, looks they are doing their best to give Obama another 4.

The GOP didn't have a choice. Years of hate mongering led to the formation of the Tea Party which used economic issues to try and distinguish itself from the larger conservative community. Now the Tea Party is being painted as just promoting the traditional right wing extremist social agenda under the guise of economic reform. In doing so the GOP has weakened the Tea Party's strangle hold on their political agenda.

I just don't see what the Republican strategy is here unless it's to make such a ruckus that they lock the Tea Party votes and demoralize everyone else to the point where they just stay home in 2012.
