I know during finals week, the whole interstate was shut down just a few miles from the college because of a chemica' spill. I got off the exit and roamed around lost for about an hour and a half, before finially getting my bearings and getting to class.

The accident had been cleared and all the other commuters had made it to class about 20 minutes after I took that exit.

I hate it when people do that. I never let them in either.
I remember back when I lived in Indiana, some ass in a Buickl LeSabre thought he'd be slick and pass all of the stopped traffic and merge up ahead. Well, he misjudged the length of road he had left - and plowed right into one of those giant orange construction barrels. The barrel went at least 10 feet in the air!

actually, the whole "merging wars" use to keep me entertained on the way to work. it was fun trying screw over the "cheaters". as soon as the dashed line disappears i normally move over to block the lane. one time a guy tried to pass me on the shoulder only to realize there was a construction sign in his way....screeeeeeeeeach.

However the other day, the right lane ahead was closed, but I thought my exit came before the closure. I was wrong.

No one understood my mistake and therefore would not let me merge so I could go the extra 100 yards to my exit.

Now THAT pissed me off more than line jumpers ever will.

To take full advantage of the capacity of the freeway all lanes should be used fully until the merge. All you do by merging far in advance of the required merge is cause the backup to move further back in the traffic stream. This often results in miles of additional backup. In other words it's the people that merge early that actually cause the backup to be miles in advance of the merge and the only responsible ones are the ones that don't merge until required and people try to punish them for doing what they are supposed to do by denying them the merge.
