so wit and intelligence still places #1 on the desired traits list.
Hey weezergirl, gopunk, luvly, and b0mbrman
my friend just told me she knows somebody who is getting married to this guy she has never even kissed before. (they both go to ucla) supposedly they want to WAIT TIL MARRIAGE.
I'm reading this and I'm thinking, "well that's odd, in this day and age where sexuality is embraced as a natural and enjoyable part of life, here's a pair that seemingly has reverted to a sort of traditionalism. What's going on here?"
and so I'm thinking about this and thinking about it and scratching my head. I mean, what in the world? Sex is natural. If people want to wait, that's fine and understandable because of the whole childbirth/pregnancy thing but no physical contact? No kissing? Where's the closeness in the relationship there??? These people are nuts ! They gotta be, right? what sort of people do these sorts of things, must be relgiious fundamentalists, yeah that's a sure way of explaining it, let's just push it off on religious fundamentalists, yeah that'll work.
And then I'm sitting here and thinking... well what happens when a person believes something and holds an idea or value and that value becomes so important, for personal reasons or other reasons, that living true to it becomes who that person is. And in looking at the world, and being saddened by what goes on it it, the person sees that an old way just seems to work better and so the person sticks to that way no matter what, following the ways of his fahers and his grandfathers.
And I think about this and I'm saddened since the person like this holds so closely to something in a world devoid of meaning and in doing so possibly misses the entire point behind the practice. And then I think, well maybe not, what if the person realizes this and simply wants to uphold those values. But then I think that such a person would be smart enough to tell others and appear to decrease chaos in a society while maintaining a rich relationship with a mate, in a situation like this.
And so now I'm still scratching my head trying to understand what's going on here and why exactly you find this ridiculous weezergirl. Is it that since sex is such a large part of who people are that it should be explored to understand another before making a commitment since there's always a fear of the indequacy and resulting pain? Am I close here? I don't know... this is a hard question. Maybe you think that what these people decide and tell others is what they really are or that you are actually concerned that they are making a mistake since your own experience and state of knowledge/ignorance tells you that in this world, such an action is sure to lead to disaster? Help me out here, I don't know what you are trying to say.
There is a reason (social) rules exist. They exist because almost all people need external rules to bring some order to the maddening world inside their heads. Those rare few endowed or otherwise possessing rules and ability to control themselves to such a degree that they are not creating too much chaos within themselves an in an environment are beyond the rules all of us try to transcend but yet they see why people do as they do and are saddened.
If you feel this is ridiculous, what exactly do you feel? If you are saddened, then I think there is a chance you have the answers yourself and don't need to post on a forum. If you feel something else, what is it?
Gopunk,
et ali, weirdness in this case may not be maladaptive. A difference from norms and accepted behaviors does not necessarily imply pathology or disease. The greatest minds are usually considered weird by the rest of the people, what's weird to us was normal at another time and what is normal to us will be weird to others in the future if history indeed repeats. Thus, perhaps it's not a matter of another being weird, perhaps it's a matter of us seeing something inside ourselves that causes a reaction like the one weezergirl apparently had (omg!).
just some thoughts... g'eve all.
Cheers !
