When the power went out in NYC people didn't behave like this....

That's because just the power went out and there wasn't a natural diaster occuring. The power went out here for days and no one did that stuff, but that's because we weren't being flooded, starved, and cut-off from the outside world.

Louisiana is an extremely backwards state. We're talking about a state that still operates under Napoleonic Code rather than English common law.

To put it plainly, people from Louisiana, generally speaking, "just ain't right."

Yep - it couldn't happen here. We're not like that.

Public gun carrying in N.O. should follow with SHOOT ON SIGHT. I guarantee the shooting would stop although Bush would look even more like a hard-liner. Then when things die down and civility gains ground, things will get back to normal.

And so when someone innocent is "shot on sight" because he's trying to protect his family from all the thieves and thugs....what are you going to say?

He won't need the gun if this gets put into action. One day would be all it took.

There's nothing left there worth saving :| I know thjat's overly cynical - I'm sure there are alot of good people simply trapped in a bad situation, and we just hear about the worst of it. But the worst is pretty bad.

It makes you realize how close to anarchy we really are though. Despite all our pretenses, humans are not inherently civilized. We are externally civilized by the institutions we've built up for that purpose, but strip those away and we're right back down there with the animals in less then 3 days.

Speak for yourself. I might go "find" some food and water, but I certainly wouldn't be stealing TVs, turning over ambulances, shooting at the National Guard, or killing my sister for a bag of ice. If I shot at anybody, it'd be self-defense against a Rodney King-style hate mob, so they wouldn't steal my sneakers or bash my brains in to get back at "society".

Shrug - I'm not trying to speak for any individuals, certainly not myself. But for society/mankind in general. This is a major american city, just like any other american city. Take away the power & comminications for a few days, limit the mobility & effectiveness of the police for a few days, and we're no better then Somalia.

We like to think we're better then that when we see crap like this happening in other countries. That we're somehow different. Seems like we aren't as different as we'd like to believe. Even on ATOT, this bastion of civilization , we have people admitting that they'd be out there looting with the rest of them if they had the opportunity.

Although I agree with your sentiment, I feel compelled to point out that all the best that the city had to offer got out before the storm hit. The people there now are, for the most part, the shallow end of the gene pool. With out leaders they fall to anarchy. I'm not talking about the mayor, or any government official, I'm talking about the heroes that always rise up and organize people into a society when everything falls apart. When this is all over we might hear stories of a few people who collected groups and lead them to safety, but for the most part everyone that would have turned the tied against anarchy left when told to.

I agree, Coloradans are some of the nicest people in the world, they'd certainly know how to behave in the face of danger.

I've been in Walmart when a big blizzard is forcast.

Welcome to the wonderful reality of reverse-Darwinism. This is the effect of generations worth of incentivising the worst, lowest-intelligence elements of society to reproduce while disincentivising it for the more intelligent and civilized people.

Thank you welfare.

Bull$hit. Yeah, I said it, Bull$hit. This would NOT happen in every city in America, I don't care what you want to say.

So what's different about New Orleans? This may be the largest example, but it's certainly happened other places - Los Angels in 1965 and 1992, Detroit in 1967, Cincinnati in 2001 etc.

this is the first ive heard of how out of control it was down there :Q I didn't know people were killing (attempting) others! this is just out of control!

like somone else said, i can hardly believe what's happening is in our country 🙁
