Are you under the impression that speed limits are for safety?

I thought they were for revenue generating.

Correct me if I am wrong

I'll agree with that one.

It is one thing to be given a ticket for an infraction that you really did not commit. Anything else is just plain whining!

Every time you speed, you are consciously breaking a law that is known to you. That means you are taking a calculated risk. So when you lose your gamble you whine about it and then fight it in court!

You were going 48 in a 30. What a pansy, can't even own up. Yes you beat the system, maybe that is all it is to you, a game.

As a Civil Engineer working for the state of LA, I can say YES. There are several factors that are used to determine the safe driving speed.

You freakin speed demon morons should be pistol-whipped for your stupidity. I'm not talking about going 5 MPH over the limit. I'm talking about the assclowns that drive over 10 MPH. If you feel the need to drive fast, get some racing tires and go to a legal track.

What pisses me off the most is that the idiots who wreck while driving wrecklessly will sue the state and win 99% of the time....even if the driver was in the wrong!

...and for you people that brag for getting out of high dollar tickets: may your next high-speed adventure end with a close encounter with an oak tree...

Wha?! 10 over is dangerous? I suppose to a pencil neck narc engineer. Dangerous is 116, and I paid my ticket.

You people have no f*cking idea what kind of road I was driving in. There was practically NO traffic, NO people around, the skies were clear, roads were dry, and visibility was perfect. I was NOT weaving in and out of traffic, I was NOT squealing my tires, I was not being reckless in any possible way or manner.

And also, I was NOT breaking the basic speed limit law, which basically states "going too fast given conditions and endangering people/property"..or something to that matter. I was doing neither.

I'm also assuming everyone in this thread who is saying I shouldn't go over the speed limit has never done so in their life? Anyone who thinks speed limits are simply there for "safety reasons" are just fooling themselves..there's any number of articles that would prove the contrary, and I'll pull them up later.

Ouch. My feelings are hurt.

School zone: Doing 35 in a 25 is dangerous to the school children

Neighborhood: Doing 45 in a 35 is dangerous to pedestrians. Children, animals, etc. tend to run across streets without looking. That 10 MPH difference could be the difference between plastering a kid against the grill of your car or slamming your breaks to avoid the hit.

Interstate driving: Doing 80 in a 70 is dangerous to ANYONE else driving on the road. I've seen countless numbers of people cut off, almost run off the road, or almost rear ending others because they were going that much above the speed limit.

Rain/Snow driving: Doing 60 in a 50 on a snowy road can get you or someone else killed. Hell, driving the speed limit can be dangerous in snow.

Country driving: Doing anything above the posted speed limit is dangerous. Farm equipment, wild animals, trees in the road, and countless other scenarios can cause for a dangerous drive. Hilly areas, curvy areas.

A 10 MPH difference may seem little, but your reaction times can be great impaired. Us "pencil neck narc engineers" don't just pull numbers out our asses. There are dozens of factors that go into considering the proper speed limit. We design for and post these speeds to keep dickholes like you from harming others..

Doesn't matter. You were exceeding the speed limit by 60%. You deserved to have to pay that ticket.

As far as your "articles" go, I'll wait for you to post some articles published by the ASCE, any professional engineering society, or any scientific society stating that speed limits are not enforced for safety.

Well there's no doubt ATOT is still full on holier-than-thous. The justice system is not a cut and clear, right and wrong system. Tickets as well as charges are nothing more than accusations and every citizen has the right to defend themselves against those charges in any way they see fit.

This....

You deserved to have to pay that ticket.

is a total crock of schitt and any American that believes that is just ignorant of how the justice system works. Nor is the drivers responsibility to babysit every Tom, Dick, and bumbling idiot that "runs out into the street without looking" either although I'm sure most all drivers do.

And when you compare the miles driven at 10 over with the total number of miles driven and then factor in the % of accidents caused by these drivers your gonna come up with a fairly minute number, but hey it all sounds good on a forum right.

I as an American encourage every citizen that is charged with a crime, even a traffic crime, to seek out an attorney and defend themselves as vigorously as possible. If not then what the justice system does to you you do deserve.

Okay, imagine if there was a stretch of freeway where the speed limit was 30 mph. Does that automatically make it unsafe to go over that speed?

The fact is, the number of issued tickets tend to go up when city budgets are down..and there are any number of "traps" around American implemented very unfairly simply to catch otherwise safe drivers. You seem somewhat intelligent that I can't imagine you refuting this idea, but if you do I'll be happy to find you examples that state otherwise.

And to the person who said I'm costing tax payers money by fighting..I could see how my not donating to the city cop donut fund can indirectly do that..but otherwise how is that possible?

I've had speeding tickets and I paid them because I'm not some idiot who thinks the rules shouldn't apply to me. I do think you should fight a ticket if it was given unfairly.

I was pulled over near my home and given a ticket for going 47 in a 35 zone. When the deputy was the writing the ticket I told him I'd lived there all my life and I was sure it was a 55 mph zone. He acted like I was some liar just trying to talk him out of the ticket. That made me mad and I decided to prove him wrong. The next day I drove that stretch of road back and forth and found that the last speed limit sign on the side of the road I was driving on before I was stopped said 55mph. The last sign on the other side of the road before I got my ticket said 35 mph. I called the state's department of highways and talked to an engineer who told me that it had to be some kind of mistake on the part of the state road department because you couldn't have two speed limits for the same stretch of highway. Before I went to court I took pics of the two speed limit signs and got a letter from the engineer. I felt really confident that I'd win the case.

The judge was a real jerk. He acted like it couldn't matter less what I'd found out about the situation and I should just stop wasting his time and pay the ticket. The deputy was there though and when the judge was saying that I had to pay anyway, he spoke up and said that he didn't think it was fair that I had been stopped and fined under the circumstances and that he wouldn't have done it if he'd known about the speed limit mistake. The judge asked him if he wanted to drop the charges and he said yes. I don't know why the deputy didn't believe me the night I got the ticket, but I'm glad he turned out to be a decent guy in the long run.

that's a cool story. :)

Syringer, my bro just got a ticket for speeding in CA.

Can you PM me and tell me what you did to get out of it? Apparently people like to preach here like they are all Jesus or something.
