Every bit is important...that could be the difference in buttons getting grouped or shortened so you'll see "..." instead of the part you needed to tell the difference between two taskbar items.

None of this matters in Windows 7.

organize? why, thats what quick search and stuff is for, and quick launch programs like launchy work great... hit alt space and start typing the first few letters...and it comes up. digging through a start menu is something you should rarely do.

I just type what I want in the search thingy. If I want Excel, I just type e x c, and it's there.

I launch almost everything from hidden docks on my desktop. I hardly ever open my start menu.

Win+R works on all 32/64 bit versions of Windows.

Except that without indexing/searching you have to know the actual executable filename when using the standard run prompt...assuming it's in your PATH.

I use it for almost everything. It works for any executable that exists under Program Files (...and your PATH folders).

The only thing I ever had a problem with is older versions of Google Chrome (because of the EXE location), and even that works fine now.

I use most of these every day at work:
. (opens the user folder)
cmd
notepad
mstsc (Remote Desktop Client = "Microsoft Terminal Services Client")
mstsc /v:[ip-or-hostname]
shutdown -r -t 0
rstrui (System Restore User Interface)
chrome [webaddress]
chrome -incognito [webaddress]
firefox [webaddress]
iexplore webaddress
iexplore -extoff
mailto:[emailaddress]
outlook
outlook /safe
winword
msimn (Outlook Express = "Microsoft Internet Mail & News")
thunderbird
winmail
wlmail
excel

DOS 5.0 elitist!

For commonly used apps like firefox, i just assign a shortcut to it in properties (CTRL+ALT+F). mIRC (yeah I know, lame) CTRL ALT M

That POS software? Hell no!

yea i agree thats its crap, i posted the SS of my menu above but TBH i rarely if ever use it, i launch 99.9% of everything out of object dock, i just like organizing the menu so its not a total mess for the random time i have to use it

*shrug* I've never actually used it. But I do know that it offers similar indexing/quick-launch functionality that the win-start menu does on Vista/7. If there's a better alternative for XP users, I don't know of it.

not really, i gave it a fair shake and it just sucks as desktop search because it tries to force all results to look like webpage hotlinks instead of organizing them in a more logical fashion, windows desktop search beats the sh*t out of it.

I mount my taskbar on the left, so I never encounter the dreaded "Micros..." taskbar tile shrinkage.

Now, with Windows 7's taskbar pinning feature, this makes me rarely need my Start Menu, but my "recent programs" list handles most of the rest. Though, I have also organized my start menu, with a "connect" folder for browsers, ftp, mail, etc., and a "discs" folder for all burning/image manipulation. I don't have too many other programs I use.

Best thing about Launchy is frequently used apps float to the top, so now when I type wd I get msword, ex for excel, vs for visual studio, sql for sql server mgnt studio, etc.

I keep my most used programs pinned to my taskbar (browser, music player, IM client). For everything else, I just hit the Windows key and type in the program name, and press enter.
