I worked 3 12's for a while. Absolutely LOVED it. Had three days with basically nothing but work, but then 4 days off. And thanks to differential I made the same as a 40hour employee.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Yeah, that gets long. I worked 16 1/2 hour shifts every day (as in no days off) for five weeks when I started working security at the hospital. That was fun. 8-(

I do it all the time. No big deal for me.

2 Week Cycle as follows...
Long Week: M/T/F/Sat/Sun = 60 hours
Short Week: W/Th = 24 hours

Total: 84 hours. We can use those 4 hours to take off early or come in late. Usually they are banked so people can take off an entire shift.

Yeah, the logistics are mind boggling there, if you assume you need 8 hours of sleep to function then your already at a sleep defecit during the week even if all you do is drive stright home and go to sleep. I litterally could not phyically function after 5 days of like 6 hours sleep, I need at least 8 to maintain my sanity.

EDIT: also, they SAY your doing it for a month and a half but then they will get 15 days behind and it will be 2 months instead :p.

I'm getting more like that as I age, but I still only average 5-6 hours a night. More than full time school, multiple jobs, etc. I spent 3 years average 3-5 5 days a week, and then sleeping 10+ hours on the weekends.

I'd probably try a three day, 13.33 hour shift week, if I had the option. Not sure if I'd like it, but it seems like having 4 days off each week would be nice. Of course, it would also suck working from 8am to 10:20pm (with lunch).

I've been working 12 hr shifts for over 1.5 years now. Started on days 7am - 7pm for either 3 or 4 days of the week and I got either 3 or 4 days off, alternated.

About 1.5 months ago I was put on night shift 7pm-7am. IT BLOWS. The only good thing is I get an immediate 20% more pay for shift differential, but still...my days/sleeping/eating are all messed up now.

I used to work a 12 hour swing schedule. Was nice in that I only worked 14 days a month and got 7 days off in a row a month. That saying, my body couldn't handle the short turn around of "hell" week.

I've never done 3 12s, but have done 4 10s and loved it. 3 day weekend EVERY weekend, 4 day weekends when there was a holiday. I almost cried when we went back to traditional 8 hour days 5 days a week. I'd sign up for 3 12s or 3 13s in a heartbeat. Having 4 days off every week would rock.

The best schedule I ever worked was when I did tech support for HP. 8am-6:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, off on Wednesday and the entire weekend. I always had a day off right around the corner. But that was just 40 hours a week.

At my last job back in 2006, there was a period of 3 weeks where I put in an average of 70 hours a week, but that's as tough as I've ever had it in my short life.

I know someone who works from 2:45 AM - 4:30 PM (that includes a 2:30 hour commute) with Sat and Tue off for 2 years straight.

I used to work 7-12's for months on end in refinery shutdowns...gets old pretty quick, but the money sure builds up...

The last job I had, (maritime construction) our normal shift was 10 hour days, but 12's and 14's were pretty common.

 how?

This is a bit misleading sorry,

start of day,

got to work as computer support tech/lab tech for school m-f 7am-330pm

from 4-1230am work as helpdesk analyst for huge navy/marine network.

That sucked ass hardcore. I also lost a lot of valuable quality time with my daughter who was 1 month old when I started that crap.

I actually also worked weird shifts as a processor on a trawler up in alaska. 18 hours on 6 off, 7 days a week. I did that for 3 seasons. hated that too but the experience of being up in alaska more than made up for it.

I'm right there with ya. It was fine for the first few years only doing about 5*10 plus an occasional weekend. Now, in my last 6 months, it has escalated to 6*12. The funny thing is, these aren't hours I'm told to work, but rather the hours I "choose" to work to try to get most of my work done.

6 12's and only 6hrs on sunday if we were lucky for 4 months. Did that again but actually got a full day off the second time. Normally worked more than 12 though :(
