but once you're a drug addict you're not really human anymore anyway, so that'd be some small comfort.
What the hell?
Sorry, that's my feeling on it (having dealt with addicts for most of my life both privately and professionally.
When you get married, have three kids, and the oldest (23) has a meth problem, ask yourself whether they're human or not. It doesn't matter whether they're on drugs or not; they can still change. A real parent would never give up on their child.
Been married, have kids. Doesn't change the fact that severe drug addictions remove the part of a person that make them who they are. They lose cognitive function, lose reason itself. They surrender their own personality and assume the personality of the substance. After a long addiction, there's absolutely nothing left that even resembles a human anymore. They become an animal who's only instinct is to get more drugs and even that instinct wars against psychosis brewing in them. No, sorry...I've been around these people most of my life, killing them is a relief...it frees them from pain, improves society, and in the end relieves a large weight from the shoulders of those saddened by their plight. It's true that rarely some people return from severe addiction, but statistically it's not a good bet. Furthermore that recovery is most often not paid for privately, which places on society the burdon of people too stupid and weak to avoid taking drugs in the first place. Nope, sorry...when you're so far gone that you'd kill your parents, it's time to check out yourself. I don't say it would be easy, but if my daughter ever reached that point I'd consider it compassionate to end her pain.
