Dude, seriously? I don't have the money for x-rays. What's the difference? My right side is swolen maybe an inch or so thick, but there's no signs of bruising on the skin (broken blood vessels). It hurts move. It hurts to fvcking breathe. A laugh is usually followed by a whince very quickly after. Sneezing (i have allergies) makes my life hell. :( If I move just right, I can feel the rib almost move in and out of place.

How can I tell the difference?

I too have bruised and broken ribs and saying one hurts more than the other is like saying it hurts more to stub your toe than it does to drop something heavy on it. Both scenarios suck (I empathise with your pain). There isn't a hell of a lot anyone can do about broken ribs. You'll just have to take it easy for a few weeks.

Rule of thumb: if it hurts, stop doing it.
2nd rule of thumb: liquor stores sell pain meds en masse

Dude I'd get it checked out. Depending which rib it is it can be a problem. Google it for more info.

It's the lowest rib on the right. I'm looking, but I don't know what I'm looking for...

I once ran straight into a concrete mailbox (big ugly thing, no idea why they make everyone in our community have the same one) when I was playing football in the street and I was out cold for a good 5 minutes.

Oh, to have a picture at the moment of impact with the mailbox. I imagine it'd be priceless.

What do caltrops have to do with this?

<edit>

OH, right. I always thought of them as a martial arts weapon -I forgot about the practical applications. :p

It really doesn't matter. These days they don't do much of anything for a broken rib except give you painkillers. Go on one of those online pharmacys and get some percodans or vicodin or something.

Go to the hospital now! If you dont have health insurance go to the county hospital. Why risk it? Let a doctor look at it.

Good luck.:thumbsup:
