I have seen brown bears in person in Yosemite National Park and also the Smoky Mountains. Despite the massive amount of calories a bear needs to consume daily they generally do not attack and eat humans and instead eat grubworms and such in tree trunks. (sounds inefficient to me)

The biggest reason they would attack humans is if you get between the mother and her cubs. But if they get hooked on human food they will search it out and thus get closer to humans.

Also bringing a gun would not necessarily save you. On other bear episode of I Shouldn't Be Alive a hunter was mauled by a bear and he was able to kill it in one shot which the narrator said is almost impossible. This hunter was lost from his hunting party and after having his leg mauled he had to stumble down the mountain side.

I have learned you have to stand your ground, flare your arms to appear larger and get the bear to back off, never turn your back to them.

Ya, people act like having a knife or gun and all of a sudden you are invincible to a bear. Those things can get pretty massive and can move quickly if angry or scared. Then chances of you getting a knife strive in on a bear....much less a killing strike....are pretty slim, especially for a 19 year old girl. One quick swipe of the bear's paw and whatever weapon you had will go flying and/or your arm will be messed up and unable to use it anyway.

But ya, a gun or knife is better than nothing

I'm going out on a limb and calling shens. This just sounds way too implausible.

My internet is acting funky... SO I will post as I can.I try scrolling too much my browser shuts down like it has memory overload.

I agree with above.
Would a call to the locals police be better? A neighbor?
Something?
OK, its Russia and it could be a squillion miles from ANYTHING.
But three calls over an hour. HELL, even in DEEP Kentucky cops can get almost anywhere in an hour.
NOT PICKING ON KENTUCKY. I was just there last week, loved it but it can get pretty rural.

Sounds to me like the gun saved him. He'd probably be dead now if he hadn't killed the bear.

It definitely did but the bear had already attacked him and ripped off the muscle on his leg so it was the best option given the situation. I would feel safer with a gun but if you have to use it on a bear you better have a lot of ammo or shot in the right spot. Bears are massive so I bet you could easily hit a spot that would not do more than hit muscle and/or fat.

Also the is called I Shouldn't Be Alive so he got very lucky.

Of course it would be hard to kill a bear, but a couple rounds from that Ruger .44 Mag would serve as a disincentive to continued gnawing on your face.
