Nice post! I just got off the phone w/ my 'deal guy' ;) at my local OM and asked him to *misplace a couple of the WD80gb's for me. I hope he'll comply!! This is even better than the COMPUSA deal last week.

Bee-leet dat! I'm already expecting it to be OOS on Sunday morning. Go buy one now and get price adjustment on Sunday.

Would you still be able to mail in the rebates, since they require purchase dates after 1/25?

Picked up one of the 80 giggers today myself. For $20 AR how can you NOT?!? There were only three on the shelf and one of the clerks said that was all they had in stock. But he said that they would issue rainchecks if they didn't have it in stock on Sunday. Might have to run in and pick up another one for a 2 x 80 RAID storage setup for my future 939/A64 setup. Whenever the 939 boards come out, that is.

Went and picked up one of the 80GB HDDs today. Thanks.

The employees were already acting funning when I asked for it. They had removed the little slips from the clear envelopes that are attached to the display box on the shelf. This is usually an indication that the item is not in stock. However, that didn't stop me. I asked for one and they had a little conference (all employees wear headsets and talk with each other from all over the store). After a few glances back and forth between themselves, one went "into the back room" and brought one out. I guess the lowest man on the employee totem pole lost out...

Jeez, right out of a sci-fi movie. For training, new employees step into the locked back room, coming back looking the same but. . . different.

If you pull off the headsets, you'll find that they are communicating with insect clicking noises. :Q

Their steely cold eyes following you as you wander the aisles. . .

I noticed that the ad says it's a "Special Edition" drive, but the ones on the shelf at my local OM only said "8 meg buffer". I always thought they were one and the same. Anybody else who prebought notice this?

I noticed the same thing too. My prebought says "8 meg buffer" no mention of "Special Edition." However, there was only one 80GB WD on the shelf to chose. I guess we'll find out for sure on Sunday.

[UPDATE]

According to some guys in the thread over on FW, the required UPC is 718037104362. That is the UPC on my drive.

mine too - "8 MB Cache", no SE, correct UPC. Hopefully no hassles with the return/rebuy next week.

This is not the external version. The external is $89.99 AR.

i guess that's why you're a super fob. it's apparent he wants to get both!

Man, the 80GB hard drive deal is old news. I knew about this 3 days ago. I already bought 5 (YES COUNT THEM....5) of these babies and waiting to return/rebuy on Sunday. It's great to have multiple addresses to use. I should run a RAID setup.

5 names and addresses to use? How? Are you going to return and rebuy them all at once? Did you put all the drives on the same receipt?

No...I know how to pay the rebate game very well. I bought the 5 drives all separately on separate receipts. I'm thinking about return and rebuy maybe all at once or 2-3 at a time. You don't need to have different names to get the rebate. As long as you have different addresses, it's all good. Think about it. There are so many people with the same names out there. I mean...there could be John Doe and this address and another at another address. So there wouldn't be any reason why I would be turned down. And plus, I've done before with no problems.

Yep.. It's called mail fraud actually.

Which different addresses are you using? Friends addresses? Family?

Screw you dude for buying that many. Save some for the rest of us. Buying 2 drives is pushing it IMHO.

No, you should run for the hills before someone beats the crap out of you.

Some people are always going to do this but I have never understood their need to come here and post about it. They know they're biting the hand that feeds them; they know they're committing fraud and yet somehow they think that people here will applaud them for it. I don't get it. :disgust:
