Olympus C-4000 + 64Mb memory for $299.99 at OM, YMMV

Does anyone have the paper handy? I just called my OM and they were out of stock. The guy checked the paper and said there weren't any replacements listed. I live 1 hour north of Chicago IL. Any help would be great.

Yep...Olympus and a few other vendors have moved to xD media. Most other are using either CF or some other type of media.

The obsolescence of SmartMedia (which will = subsequent higher prices coupled with lower max capacity) is prolly one of the only potential drawbacks to this cam.

If you got this camera don't forget to get your FREE (AR's) Epson color printer from here and using this rebate. Just my way of thanking you for the great deal! 😉 BTW use a Staples $20 coupon code rather than the $10 they suggest.

The freakish thing about the Olympus rebate is that it is offered for only two cameras: the d-550 and the c-4000. Somehow the destiny of these two cameras has become intertwined! 🙂

Kinda lost on the SmartMedia obsolesces concerns. If I have a Digital Camera and a couple of SmartMedia cards why worry about SmartMedia going away? The Flash memory is reusable, not like film. And besides, in a couple of years I can probably buy a 1 GigaPixal camera with 10 times the features for about the same price as I paid for the C-4000.

True...and I don't think it's a huge concern, but it's something to take note of before buying.

I do wish SM cards came in higher capacity than 128 MB tho.

BTW: Can't media cards wear out, depending on how they are treated?

Yes, you can ruin the golden area on them if you're not careful, but I've never done it after being pretty rough with em.

128 MB means quite a few shots at the best resolution, like 60-70? Should be enough, carry another card if ya need more.

Scoooore!!!

I proclaim today diverdown57 day.

I had this thing on order from Dell for $369.10. But after reading this thread I went to my local office-max here in SoCal. When I asked for the D-550 the clerk said they were out so then I asked for the substitute. Like you said , he pulled out some list and there was the C-4000. Then he sheepishly says, "Wow, that's a good deal". I tried to use the Staples coupon but they wouldn't go for it. Anyway, I got the camera and smart media for $299. Thanks a lot!!!

You guys are so lucky. I think all the OM in the Bay Area are out. The Mountain View OM is offering the C-700 instead, but I want the C-4000!

Check that. I went down in person and was able to get this deal at the downtown Seattle store. At the last minute I asked if I could get a second one. Mgr smiled and said sure.

Thanks for posting!!!

And here's a copy of my receipt if it helps anyone:

I've picked up the only one at Vernon Hills store. But the deal is good to go at Palatine and Morton Grove. They will do the deal at Palatine, but you have to ask for them to check the substitution list, i guess, so that they know there is no way out. The funniest thing is, at Morton Grove store they even suggest to you on the phone that they will substitute for the c4000 without you having to ask for it.
Good luck!
BTW dak125, you might want to enable your Private Messaging for cases like this 🙂 Just a suggestion coming from experience.

Has anyone noticed if this is the only camera they're subbing on the "list"? I'm looking for something smaller, so just curious-

TIA-

QnD

HEY DEDICATED CHECK THE STORE IN SOUTH SAN JOSE IF YOU WILLING TO GO THAT FAR THEY STILL HAVE SOME IN STOCK!! THATS WHERE I GOT MINE AT, BUT YOU MIGHT WANNA CALL AND DOUBLE CHECK TO SEE IF THEY DO

I just want to reaffirm to everyone, this is a very nice camera. The super macro mode is well worth it. Here's a quick shot I took last night to test out the super macro mode.

Sample Super Macro picture

The screw is about 2 inches away from the lens. The original 4megapixel format of the picture you can see the dust particles in pretty good detail on the threads of the screw. 😀

Wow...great pic KR.

Haven't opened mine yet...still searchin for a coupon 😉
And prolly gonna put an extended warranty on it from OM.

I seem to have an unerring ability to drop anything breakable with a service contract within hours of first using it 😱

I'm the only unlucky one!!! I called to check with them last night they said D-550 is out of stock and they have the substitute C-4000. When I went there today the sales say they will have D-550 probably on Friday so they are not giving any substitute now, I can go to get a D-550 at the time. I told him I won't be able to come on Friday he said I can call them and they will leave one for me to pick up later. What else can I say? I'm always unlucky!!!

Argh... I just got back from OM. There was a sign saying they were out of the D-550 so I think (woohoo)... then I ask about the substitution and he says "huh? no.". I convince him to check and he comes back saying "you're right" and he heads back to the lockup to get me the C-4000, he comes back and says "We found the D-550 in the stock room, so no substitution". Damn!

How about buying the last D550 and the C4000 substitute. Then come back and return the D550 and keep the C4000.

I think they had a bunch of them that had come in on a truck, but just never realized that the shelf tag said out of stock. I wasn't prepared to buy a truckload 🙂

Just got my C-4000ZOOM in Cranberry PA (Pittsburgh). It's an awesome camera. They had none left in North Hills. I'm thinking about getting the printer too but on the fine print for the $75 rebate it says "Only one claim per EPSON and Olympus product purchased". That would preclude using the $40 rebate to get the printer down to $80. Has anyone found out about this? For $45, this printer is still not a bad deal.

Called and they are all out of stock in my area, asked if there was a substitution and was told no not on that item, however I could get a raincheck as of friday 1/31/02
