Olympic speed skating: WTF just happened?

I was just watching the men's 1500m speed skating coverage, and I am confused as to the result.

Kim Dong-Sung appears to have won, with Apollo Ohno in second. There was much booing from the crowd. Seconds later, I hear Kim was disqualified, putting Apollo in 1st. The reason for disqualification was "crossing the line first".

WTF happened? I'm confused. 😕
 
bwahahaha!!! I don't know anything about speed skating, but if that's the reason they gave that's hilarious.
 
That's not the reason, the penalty was for "cross tracking", which is essentially blocking.

its called cross tracking, where a guy skate in a wider track suddenly change to tighter crack...

kind of like blocking in basketball...
 
I think they said "crossing the lane" not cossing the line.


The Korean guy was a little bit outside, then went inside as the American tried to pass...cutting him off.
Similar to a sideswipe in auto driving.
 
Yeah, he got pwned, he would have gotten screwed either way, just not as badly if he didn't cut off apolo ohno, maybe woulda gotten silver. GO USA!
 
If the guy hadnt of cross tracked he would have came in second. What a tool... The Koreans seem to not be the best sports. I mean WTF, kicking the blocks, throwing a temper tantrum, he knew the rules...

of course they're good at sports! they play good game starcraft, counterstrike, ultima etc!~
 
Okay, Ill change that, the South Korean mens short track team do NOT display good sportsmanship... Hows that?
 
Paybacks are a bitch. If that Korean skater hadn't wiped out and intentionally clipped Ohno(IMHO) causing Ohno to lose the gold, you wouldn't have seen this one called.
 
I'll have to agree with the Korean short track team not being good sports. The time the whole track wiped out and the guy in last won, the Korean pulled everyone else down as he was falling. One other race I saw, the Korean dude kept reaching over and grabbing the guys leg and holding him back. What's up with that.
 
That's really bad sportsmanship, grabbing people's legs and what not. I doubt thecountry reflects some stuff the skating team does, I've run into some local sports teams that treat opponents like garbage and others that are in it for the sport. I think it's just the small group on the team, sad that many people will associate theiractions with the country when it's really those Canadians we need to worry about. Never trust a canuk.

Well considering the South Koreans have took home golds in speed skating consistantly in the past Winter Olympics, I would say this has been a bad year for them. Too much pressure was placed on Kim Dong-Sung since the rest of the team was not eligible for the 1500m and plus the men's South Korean team for speed skating have not won anything so far. Kim Dong Sung went too far for the gold and ended up losing it.

That was only him not the whole team throwing a tantrum (I didn't see the korean team throwing chairs from the footage) Bad sportsmanship? Yeah but he lost it all. As for

, I believe it is illogical for any skater to try to clip another skater especially in short track where a fall of one means a fall of another.
 
Why all the race bashing? Wasn't it in America that two stupid dads got into a fight where one killed the other over a trivial hockey game?

I did see Kim Dong-Sung as being very childish though. However, I don't think the Korean who tripped Ohno did it intentionally. I first saw the slow-motion video and my reaction was "WTF was that??" But then I saw the normal video and could easily see the tripping was out of reflex since he was reaching out to grab onto something.
 
I was rooting for our guy all the way; but the reason they give for the disqualification seems rather stupid. "You can't change tracks when someone is trying to overtake you" I mean, what else would you do, when someone grabs your @ss? Move over laterally and give them room to move ahead? There were also some soccer style dramatics on the part of Ohno, when he pulled his hands back and made a gesture.

If anything, I think the crowd were not the best sports. I seriously believe that probably at least 80% of that crowd had no idea that the korean crossed the lane in front of Apollo (not even the commentators noticed it with all the different camera views in front of them. did you?) prior to the judge pointing it out, and when the korean won, he was congratulated with boos.

Granted, Kim Dong-Song's behavior wasn't exactly golden either, but I was seriously appalled at the crowd.

If you're a football fan, think of it as pass interference. Or if you're a basketball fan, think of it as a block. Or if you're a baseball fan, think of it as impeding the base runner. Same thing applies to all other sports. 😉

I do agree with the dramatics though...whatever gets you that gold I guess.
