Everyone is always talking about how good olive oil tastes and how good it is for you. I don't get it. I dip my bread in olive oil and all I taste is a piece of oily bread. I can't detect much of an olive oil flavor. Am I missing something?

massively depends on the olive oil.

i've gone to a few places that produced a whole variety of olive oils, and you could really tell the difference a-twixt them all ;)

It should taste well different to any other single blend oil tho...

I love to cook with olive oil, especially garlic infused. If you are dipping bread in your olive oil, I suggest putting some fresh ground pepper on a plate with some olive oil.

Yep.. what kind do you have now? Safeway Select?

LOL, I got the walmart brand once. When I got home and smelled the oil I dumped it down the drain.

When I was in college I used a bottle that cost something like $18. Is that expensive enough to taste good? I don't see how a slight fruity aroma means it tastes good and is worth all the fat.

should taste distinctively like olive oil at that price. whether you like that, or it tastes good across a paddock of decent olive oils to you, is a different matter ;)

It honestly doesn't bother me that she says that... What bothers me is she'll say,
"Just add a little EVOO......extra virgin olive oil..."

IF YOU SAY THE STUPID ABBREVIATED VERSION, DON'T SAY THE FULL VERSION. IT IS STUPID!!!!

ok...I'm done.

I had Safeway Select while I was big into cooking for awhile. For a couple of months I used it, but only because I felt obligated to. I never understoof the big fascination with it. Then I bought some real olive oil and was dumping it in everything. Suddenly I was a great cook, the whole time Safeway had been ruining my food!

I like Trader Joe's - they have good quality olive oil for really low prices. I use olive oil absolutely whenever I can. For some reason, though, I don't really like it on salads.

Olive oil is just the "Butter" of the new millineum.
It has very little taste, (Even the very best EVOO has very little taste, while the cheap stuff usually has a terrible taste) and while it IS more healthy than butter or margarine, it is just the Trendy thing to do.
Use it if you want to impress the masses, but if it is taste you seek, use butter or margarine.

Canola is much healthier than olive and it is cheaper too. It provides a better balance of positive cholesterol. The reason to use olive over canola is the olive flavor.

The hell? By "trendy" you mean being used for something like 6,000 years?
