Olive oil is just the "Butter" of the new millineum.
It has very little taste, (Even the very best EVOO has very little taste, while the cheap stuff usually has a terrible taste) and while it IS more healthy than butter or margarine, it is just the Trendy thing to do.
Use it if you want to impress the masses, but if it is taste you seek, use butter or margarine.

Olive oil is trendy? Hahaha yea because it just came on the market last year..

Last year?
Uhm, what rock did you crawl out from under?

I like Trader Joe's - they have good quality olive oil for really low prices. I use olive oil absolutely whenever I can. For some reason, though, I don't really like it on salads.

Canola is much healthier than olive and it is cheaper too. It provides a better balance of positive cholesterol. The reason to use olive over canola is the olive flavor.

Canola and olive are the only oils I have. I actually use canola more than olive (for baking, stir-fry, etc.).

Olive oil has been harvested and pressed since long before there was such a place called Rome.

It's got more taste to it than vegetable oil, which in this case isn't a good thing. I really don't care for olive oil. Some italian sandwich shops douse their sandwiches in it, and that just totally ruins the taste for me.

Can someone explain why Olive oil is more healthy? I compared the fat content, cholestrol etc with canola oil. It was the same (though they don't give up a split up between good and bad cholestrol).

Totally disagree. My family's roots are Italian and it's pretty much the only oil I've cooked with / eaten. Nothing wrong with the flavor of butter (healthiness is another issue) but give me olive oil any day. If you don't like bread dipped in it I don't really blame you.. try drizzling a little on a slice of bread, adding a little garlic powder (or the real thing if you feel like mincing some) and black pepper and throwing it in a toaster oven for a bit.

Olive Oil tastes like horrible, I don't care what anyone says it's a disgusting flavor especially on salads. I want to just puke it up.

That doesn't mean it isn't trendy... Eskimos wore fur boots for hundreds of thousands of years, but that doesn't mean "ugg boots" aren't trendy.

Better yet, straight olive oil with Parmesan with fresh oregano or basil. Better yet, use genuine Parmigiano Reggiano cheese direct from Parma Italy.
