Oldtimers Sound Off

I had to check in....even though I'm not that old, LOL.

SETI Registered on: Wed Jul 21 00:24:58 1999 UTC

I joined TA SETI around Sept of 1999....kinda old. 🙂

Sukhoi, Maggie was Hutch's girlfriend, and also a common target on IRC, where X would constantly hit on her.😛

Hey SD -- Yes, I use the verb "defenestrate" a lot, actually. That and the fact that I've grown my vocabulary makes for some interesting moments around the average UMD student 🙂

PS -- remember that modem you gave me way back when? It's still in service 🙂 Thanks again buddy!

Can we verify that Meggie was a real person and not an alter ego of Jutch?!?

Sorry, that was bad of me. /me slaps his own hand.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Though not all of the oldtimers chimed in (Mika, where are you?!?), there have certainly been plenty of familiar faces pop in to say hi. We need to do this again someday.

<< We need to do this again someday. >>

As long as old age doesn't keep us from remembering that is! 😛

Why don't we just keep this thread on top, then everyone can read about all the achievements, difficulties (did we have them? 😉 ) and fun we have had here in the DC forum.
A better promotional tool we can't have. 😀

Great thread for reminiscing! It sounds like every time I get together with my old high school and university friends 😉.

All you guys who remembered mika.dynip.com have a great memory. That is the only question from Jay which I couldn't remember until Polo mentioned it 😱!

The ViRGE fiasco is probably one of the most fun and funniest things I've ever witnessed. ViRGE had no idea what was going on 😀.

The first machine I was cracking with was a P2-266 back in Oct 1998. I hadn't joined Team AnandTech until JonB convinced me in April 1999. That's also when the pproxy went into production.

Here's some of the history of the pproxy/statsbox. The first box was a P100. It only took a few weeks of JonB's high output to make the stats runs slow to a crawl on that machine! It was shortly thereafter upgraded to a dual Celeron 450. At the beginning, it was tied to my cable modem at home. A couple months after starting to run the pproxy, I moved to another city. The pproxy stayed in the old city until our there house sold. Does anyone remember the posts "The pproxy is down, but I won't be able to reboot it until I drive back this weekend". That was some flakey hardware! The pproxy lived in a friends apartment for a couple weeks before moving to my office where it stayed for quite some time.

Here's a link I've pulled up from the past: http://mika.dhs.org/rc5/test/byemail.html

Here's a couple semi-obscure questions:
Who coined the phrase "CrackRack"?
Who is the only Team AnandTech member I've met face to face 😉?
What was the city I originally lived in?

greetz: BGod, BoberFett, BPhantom, BurntKooshie, Captian_Rob, dmcowen, Jay, JonB, Ken_g6, LD, narzy, netopia, mechBgon, Osmo, PeterN, Polo, Possessed Freak, RaySun2Be, Slahr Dzhe, ViRGE, wolfie, and everyone else I've missed!

Damn Mika! That link sort of made me actually get choked up for the old days! Makes me want to compete again too.... shhhhh..... no comments!

After chatting with PF earlier on ICQ, he pointed out to me that not all of his trivia had been answered yet:

server host = Othernet (Jay)
reason for switch = Othernet broomed everyone so they could turn the server into a daytrading site
channel = #anandtechrc5 (took me two guesses, my first attempt was #anandtech...PF then pointed out that it was part of TWTA's first email address for DNet😉)

😎

Osmo.

Who were the 2 members who did a RC5 mega flush under the handle "I_Hate_Microsoft"?

They took time off from Gamma Flux to work on it. 😉

Polo- That Warp Core video is great! Thanx!

Jay,

I said that "not all" of PF's questions had been answered, I saw your post originally...

now you have been given proper credit. 😉

I thought you joined a little latter than that? unless you joined the team long before you joined the forum.
I joined TA 5/11/99 (UK dates) ,I'm sure you joined a few months after me shortly after that infamous thread in OT where you upset a few SETI people😉 ,including Mgallik ,but we all shortly made up & you then joined us 🙂.
Are you,me & Mgallik the only people who remember that? ,(seems odd as there were many people in that thread).............. I guess your glad of that?😉😀
I still count you as an oldie anyway 😉 hehe

Crow
Good to see you're still about🙂 ,I still remember that race we had to 1k in SETI where you blasted past us all right from the very back!:Q ,I still have the thread saved!.I think that was the 1st TA SETI race that involved more than 2 people.🙂
Pitty to see you haven't done SETI since🙁

ColinP
You must have some stories to tell, how about filling us on Hell Burners brief defection in the early days:Q? ,I never did find out the full story.

Someone else who'd know but I havent seen recently(I think!😱) is Rellik remag

Polo
Damn I knew the answer to that straight away! ,I've still got the pic! ,just got here too late😛😉
Btw you didn't answer me re Ragman ,any idea what happened to him?

Yet another long time reader here, though I'm usually pretty quiet. I've been cracking for the team since my original team made it to a half a million blocks (thus completing our original goal - that took a long, long time on those old systems.). I've greatly enjoyed watching the cameraderie and friendship that has been here since day one. While I'm a lurker, I like to think that my contributions to the team make me at least a small part of the group.

And...unfortunately...all my mighty cracking power goes away in about 6 weeks when I move on from graduate school and my labs are handed over to others. So you fast RC5 folks get a break from me nipping at your heels!

Keep it up guys, memories are a wonderful thing, and I'm loving reading 'em.

Heya Z,

<< I like to think that my contributions to the team make me at least a small part of the group >>

Ofcourse you are part of the group. You can drop the small thingy. 🙂

We're one big happy, cracky family overhere. 😀

Boy you got right on that one Crow!

I remember when MM started that flush, he posted here that Mika's proxy might be hard to connect to for a while. Some of us thought that a proxy outage was in the works. 😉 Ended up that the flush took hours because of all the small packets that Dnet had handed out at the time.

What was the total flush? Wasn't it over a million?
