Being new I've only seen someone use Swain once and he absolutely dominated. I kept thinking "who the crap is that giant raven?"

Care to write a guide? I've been kicking ass with Lux lately.

Torment is a DOT that also enhances all other damage from Swain. So get that on first, fire up your ult, Q for slow, W for root (1 sec delay so lead a little), ignite and deathfire.

Deathfire Grasp is a must on Swain. Then it's your typical caster type items.

Your weakness is Ignite. Take QSS or Hourglass as needed to counter it. Let your other teammates initiate and wait for most of the heavy CC and trigger happy igniters go off before you wade in and clean up.

At level 2, your Q+E is quite an impressive amount of harass. If you're laning with a stun, you should be getting FB.

Had a pretty frustrating ranked game. We had a typical balanced team, opposing us was a mundo, alistar, kogmaw, shaco and nunu, iirc. We didn't realize their strategy until it was too late... basically they used their nearly unkillable/super fast tanks mundo and nunu to kite us around and harrass, while alistar would walk up to a turret without minion support, ult, and beat on it until he died. Seconds later he would revive & teleport back to a nearby ward, and do it again.

By the end alistar was something like 2 kills and 18 deaths or something, but he just chipped away our turrets one at a time until we had exposed inhibitors ,and then he started killing them. We were way ahead on kills, but we couldn't push into kogmaw mundo and nunu defended turrets even in a 5vs3 situation, because of how stupid it is trying to kill mundo combined with nunu's ult and kog's range. As alistar's suicide missions eventually took out our inhibitors, we lost when they came back with a baron buff while we were defending against super minions in every lane.

Really felt like a stupid BS tactic. I'm normally not against backdooring at all, it's a valid strategy to counter the teams that simply roam around in a squad of 5 but refuse to commit, but this was a team designed around forcing the game into a stall while they send suicide alistar in to abuse his passive + ultimate. It just left a bad taste in my mouth, we killed alistar every time yet it didn't matter, extra 100 gold for us from killing him was countered by the gold they got from turrets, and he was just ressed and back alive before we could push anything anyway.

Obviously would have helped a lot if we had a TF, or fortify. Next time I guess we will.

Garen's really weak right now and sort of roleless. He's not a tank, he just happened to be good built as one when Sunfire stacking was still viable (combined with people somehow not being able to ever avoid him). Without that he doesn't do enough damage to get people's attention and lacks hard CC that would make him more of a threat. He's just a walking ult that's going to take out a low HP squishy if you allow him to get near. If you do build him DPS, he has survivability issues.

I haven't met a good Garen since he got nerfed and they made Sunfire's passive unique.
I wouldn't call him really weak, he was that after the nerf and before the rebuffing. I think of him as tanky-dps. He can off tank and do damage. He might not be better at it then say Mundo, but he brings a few items to the table he doesn't.

I've read the guide you linked along with others. I just need to play him more to get a better feel for his limitations.

I've seen fortify work in sub-30 games (what doesn't right?) as I'm only level 27. But the basic premise does seem to have some sense to it. Typically you have a window of real opportunity (barring suiciding Alastairs 🙂 ) to attack and take down a tower with creep support, well if every time that chance presents it self and fortify is up it really really extends the life of towers.

I've only seen one or two people use Fortify in the low level games. I think that, overall, communication is so terrible that no one attacks "smartly" enough to need 'em.

So, I had a thoroughly awful set of games with ivan tonight, I mean, massively awful. I chock part of it up to still being new and part of it to trying new characters who I don't know how to build, whatever the case I was consistently the feeder. Oh, and I learned that I simply cannot play Annie...

Then, of course, as soon as he gets off I have a great game...methinks it's pairing us up with better opponents since you've obviously got a better record than I do, but I ended up 16-3-16 with Garen when running solo. He's probably my favorite champion to play with thus far, I just seem to have such random luck with him...

I just had a great game with Garen, built pure tank and the other team always liked to focus me, was fantastic.

Have the ranked requirements changed at all? I gave up playing because you couldn't do ranked until 30 and was taking too long to get there.

Yes, since you are queing up with somebody of higher level you will be playing more with people of a higher skill level than yourself. When I was 30 queing up with my brother at 10, we would play against people 13-17ish.

No. You have to be level 30 in order to do ranked games.

Although its pretty a dota clone there are some nice improvements. Played it a little but didn't made me quit Dota (call me an old school one)

Who me? I should be able to. Add RivenDY (btw what page is the vent info on?)

Played last night, got off, and then saw this post. Logged back on and added ya for later!

I'm actually a higher rank than he is (his second account), although I'm sure he has a better W/L record.

Chiropteran,

If someone plays a defend and BD push like that, you either need to take the initiative and win that 5v4 fight (tough against those opponents) or you need to spread out and dual/tri-lane push. Especially if Alistar is BD'ing without minions. Also revive is on a super long cooldown so he can't do that more than once every 5 minutes.

I personally love to take fortify if I'm tanking and occasionally on jungle characters if I get the mastery. Galio flash > fortify > ult on someone who's pushing is usually good for a kill.

i think it's because we are grouped, they pitted us against other group who are also very likely running smurfs (remember that last game's jax's name is superbadsmurf or something?)

all the backdoors ain't gonna help if the team can't keep a tower up =D

we will do 3 smurfs in the weekend again =P

I've smurfed twice. Once to try out new (to me) characters and won two games, then zirze created a smurf account and we dual-queued. As soon as the game starts we're against three guys named smurfxxx and zirze starts chatting with some other guy about some legendary Dota games they played in.... needless to say we had two actual newbs and they just got smashed. I honestly don't really see any point to smurfing unless you actively dislike the rune/mastery system.

Why do you need to smurf to try out a new character?

You realize nobody can see your loses but you, right? Unless I am mistaken...
