"Pwned" with the "P" pronunciation is the most accepted in gaming culture, however,I say "owned" as a reference to the orignial spelling

The origin is from Warcraft. Apparently, the developers were going to make the game display "owned" during a scripted event, but instead, mistyped it so that it displayed "pwned"

whats the proper way?

since it's a typo/way around the language filter, I just pronounce it "owned". You don't pronounce words differently, when they are spelled incorrectly in everyday reading, do you?

You do, because it's funny. It's like people pronouncing pr0n 'pron' instead of 'porn'. I can't lower myself to mispronouncing stuff on purpose (my brain has a hard enough time keeping up with the proper ways of doing things, let alone adding in deviations), but i can see why people pronounced misspelled words on purpose.

Which one?

It started in Counter-Strike, right when it was starting to get big. The term grew with the player population.

Edit: Pronunciation: "Pone-d"

What game?

First time I ever saw it was in the Rune demo, when I bunny hopped with an attack buff and lopped off 3 other players heads using a sword as big as me. (man that game was mindless fun)

That was maybe 1999 or 2000. I have a feeling it predated that.

Taken from..

Unlike the other people who have posted definitions that are ridiculous, do not have substantial backing, or are simply mis-informed, I will give the complete definition of what "pwned" means.

1. The origins of "pwned" are debated but there are two possible sources:
a. A prominent quake player mis spelled "owned" and the new word "pwned" was adopted by people who thought it was "1337".
b. A warcraft map designer misspelled "owned" and thus people started using "pwned" instead.

The definitions are as follows:
In video games:
1. Completely annihilated or dominated.
2. Perfectly owned, meaning the other player did not do any damage.

I pwned your head with my awp.

OR

I just pwned your ass noob!

I had always heard it being explained the quake way. I think more newbies to the gaming world are saying it stands for "Pure Ownage" (like your kids) or "Perfectly Owned", but when it started it was just another misspelled word that was leet, like teh or n00b.

Which one?

Urban Dictionary says Warcraft, but I was thinking it was something else...but can't recall.

I heard Warcraft as well. It was a mispelling in a warcraft mod.

"User1 was pwned by user2."

Actually makes more sense for it to be from Counter Strike with that statement.

Edit: this is it...

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".

Warcraft came out before Counter Strike.

I always thought it came from counterstrike. people woud type Owned so much that often times the misspelling would crop up and eventually it became fashionable/funny/whatever to use the misspelling instead of the real world. kind of when like people choose to write "teh" instead of the

You people can never give me a hard time about my poor spelling ever again.

If a father and son can argue over how to purposely misspell something and no one say how ridiculous it is, then I can be allowed to misspell something by accident and not be called a fool.

...And you're right by the way.

If I remember right, it started in IRC, when the word owned was banned, it was also an easy typo to make with p and o so close. It just caught on. And it does not stand for pure ownage or whatever the hell your kids said it does.

Why the hell would the word "owned" be banned from IRC?

I have had this argument with younger kids as well except they call it "power owned"

Pure ownage? Your children suck at intarweb memes. :(

It was first used as a misspelling of 'owned' on Diablo2, or at least that's what I've heard.

What game?

You are, but it certainly didn't start here.

The fact that a father and son is having this argument is kinda surreal though! I can't imagine having this kind of discussion with my dad. Do you also have your son's MySpace/Facebook added to yours?

lol, no, they aren't allowed a MySpace account.

My oldest actually used it in conversation one day by pronouncing it phonetically "powned". I broke up laughing, and corrected him. Then he and my next oldest son started arguing with me on it's pronunciation and meaning. It's an ongoing battle, that I will win with ATOT's help :D

The pronunciation of it is 'pownage' though.

EDIT: er i should clarify that... i've heard people pronounced it with the 'p'... even in South Park, the World of Warcraft episode, they pronounced it with a 'p'. So i'm assuming the term is now properly pronounced that way (some co-workers pronounce it like that too)

sad that words are being defined by South Park (even though it is sort of a slangish/internet word, its still sad).

Now just remember to keep us up to date when you and your sons are Friends with one another on Facebook/MySpace. That should bring with it some funny events.

there's a guy here at work who has his son on as a friend on his myspace page and vice versa. i've seen some comments between the two. nothing too weird there though, but i have seen the son's friends (female friends) posting on the dad's myspace, which is weird...

I think the generally accepted legend is that it came from warcraft, but it could have just as easily been from any of the early FPS or RTS games (really, any competitive multi player game that involves communicating with your opponents via text, but fps and rts games are the prime example)
