"Pwned" with the "P" pronunciation is the most accepted in gaming culture, however,I say "owned" as a reference to the orignial spelling

The origin is from Warcraft. Apparently, the developers were going to make the game display "owned" during a scripted event, but instead, mistyped it so that it displayed "pwned"

when we say warcraft, which one? it was way before WoW.

Since there is no "World of" or II or III before or after the word "Warcraft". I would make and educated guess that it is referring the first one.

All I ask is that you pronounce it owned. Just because you can't type for crap doesn't mean you should talk like crap. :p

was the 1st one even multiplayer? or did it even have scripted events? its been so long since i played it.
i don't think the term is that old. its only been within the past few years that i've heard it, so WCIII would make more sense to me.

It is a simple misspelling made popular. Same as teh (the) or dman (damn). pwned is an accidental typing of the word owned. P and O are very close after all. It comes from the days before voice chat in games, when you had to type very fast on the fly or risk getting fragged.

whats the proper way?

since it's a typo/way around the language filter, I just pronounce it "owned". You don't pronounce words differently, when they are spelled incorrectly in everyday reading, do you?
but its deliberate, so shouldn't it pronounced the same?

I'd go against stating an exact origin, because I know it was around in Quake1 which was around before SC. And it was probably around before that too.

They're wrong on 'woot', so i don't know how reliable they are. Woot came from 'root', when hackers would gain root access.

!Speculation!
It was a misspelling of "owned" in some classic PC multi player game. People do pronounce the "P" because it's become somewhat of a comical meme on the subject of stupid or under aged gamers and their feeble attempts at trash-talking. Now kids actually say it in a serious fashion, completely oblivious to it's joking roots.

It's kind idiotic, sort of along the lines of "newbie and n00b". One is childish, the other is legitimate.

That is my take on the whole gaming lingo deal. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly confident that I'm accurate with my descriptions.

They got a lot of that wrong. Example: "Hax" is not primarily used on x-box live... It's much older.

IGN is retarded, anyway.

I always thought "woot" came from llamas, for some reason. Not sure why as I can't find any internet proof. Sort of like, the llama goes woot, the sheep go bleet.

There was a time when llamas were very popular in internet memes. Winamp's original intro was "Really whips the llama's ass".

How do you pronounce that?

:D :p

That's what happens in WoW when you're trying to pwn somebody while your mom is trying to take the keyboard away from you to get you to go to bed.

Well. Maybe the woot thing is off a little, but your explanation is a little underground and with "HAX" they never said "primarily" they say "commonly". Either way they never say it originated on Xbox live. It still means the same.

I think IGN pretty reliable. I mean more reliable than ATOT. Look at the spectrum of different answers here. And everyone thinks they're right. I will take IGN over ATOT.

Nope, not started here and it it is spelt that way AFAIK due to the o and p being right next to each other. It's a common misspelling of it.

1. pwned 5038 up, 815 down

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."

OR

"That team totally pwned us."

Is anyone reading the thread before posting? I've noticed many people talking about the devloper from Warcraft as if it had not been posted 3 times already.
