okay, stupid question concerning the phrase "pwned"

My sons argue that the internet-slang word "pwned" stands for "Pure Owned/Ownage". I argue that it stands only for "owned", because as far as I know the term originated at ATOT several years ago because "owned" was banned/frowned upon by the mods and "pwned" - with the p right next to the o on the keyboard - was a way around the language filter.

Who's right?

pwned is just like using the word "teh" for "the". it just happens when you're typing fast or carelessly and you're too lazy to change it.

My oldest actually used it in conversation one day by pronouncing it phonetically "powned". I broke up laughing, and corrected him. Then he and my next oldest son started arguing with me on it's pronunciation and meaning. It's an ongoing battle, that I will win with ATOT's help

The pronunciation of it is 'pownage' though.

EDIT: er i should clarify that... i've heard people pronounced it with the 'p'... even in South Park, the World of Warcraft episode, they pronounced it with a 'p'. So i'm assuming the term is now properly pronounced that way (some co-workers pronounce it like that too)

You're both wrong, but you're closest to being right. Just a misspelling that became popular because it was repeated so often because the p is adjacent to the o on the keyboard. Same as the frequent misspelling teh for the.

since it's a typo/way around the language filter, I just pronounce it "owned". You don't pronounce words differently, when they are spelled incorrectly in everyday reading, do you?
