Okay, I have a promotion coming ... UPDATE!

Here's the deal...

When I had my review, I was promised a promotion and a $5000 bump in pay. It's not a lot, but it will tide me over. They would make it retroactive to my start date when it took effect.

It has been four months now -- and I haven't gotten that money yet. And I am increasingly worried that I won't be getting it. I talk to my manager and he's like "Don't worry, it's retroactive" and assures me I will get it. My manager is a good guy but he's lazy and doesn't bother mentioning it to the CIO who can get my promotion approved and done.

Question is this... should I make a stand on this? Tell my manager that it's unacceptable to keep me waiting, and that I may have to look for other opportunities if it can't be done? It's not like I am not looking already, but then they have more reason to keep me.. and they *love* me here.

I am in a tough spot... I do want the money and I could use it now rather than later.. I am trying to start saving properly, and get rid of some bills and that money would be very useful. I am also looking actively for another job but I like my job now... just too far, and not enough cash even with the raise, I'm still under par. I had to take it at the time becuase it was all there was and the economy was in the crapper.

Anyways, some advice here is appreciated.. I am just trying to get the raise and not get a hard time about it since it was promised to me. Thanks very much!

**UPDATE**
Okay, so I talked to my boss and told him it was the last straw -- and then finally the VP of IS called me into his office to discuss my problem. I explained it was taking them 5 months to give me the promotion that I don't know 100% that I'll get until I actually GET it. I told him in that 5 months I could have been looking for a job and then he starts saying "well I'd hate to lose you, you are a great asset blahblbhablha", to which I said, "if I'm such a good asset, why is it taking so long to give me a promotion that by your words, I deserve?"

Anyways long story short, he gave me the politicians answer and said "it's in the works" and to "be patient". I told my boss this and even he said that it shouldn't take this long. I told him that as of the end of the year I'd be looking for a new job, and he even offered himself as a reference saying, "You have to do what's best for you man, I understand."

I thought that was pretty cool of him.

Update #2:
Okay, got my promotion. It's NOT retroactive to my start date, which is what I figured. :|

I am doubling my efforts now to look for an alternative position to where I am. It's not the money I cared about, it's the fact that I was promised something and it wasn't delivered. Anyways, just wanted to update you. Don't ever take anything for granted, get it in writing, and always look out for #1. I am learning the hard way that being a 'nice guy' in any world doesn't pay off.

If you're a pushover now, you're setting a tone for the rest of the time you work there.

Well, you can either keep your mouth shut and hope, or ask and risk them getting pissed off. My guess is after 4 months, he's hoping you forget and the deal fell through.

I say be patient but be serious with him on one occasion when you are sure the timing and the pitch is perfect and tell him you need the money now rather than later.

Then wait at least 45 days before saying anything again.

Get another job offer before you do anything drastic. But in the meantime, it isn't bad to mention it again to your boss. Tell him you needed the money before Christmastime because of a family issue.

That is a really good question. Word of mouth don't mean squat in some states.

No, nothing confirmed. I think I will talk to him today and say that 4 months is a long time to wait, and that if they want me around then I want these things in a timely fashion.

I'm getting very peeved right now... just trying to control my anger :(

I gotta agree with that. Don't kick down your bosses door and demand the money, but constantly remind him and get more serious each time.

Didn't you announce here that you were getting that review/promotion a few months back here on ATOT? I remember posting and saying something like get it in writing because word of mouth means absolutely jack sh!t. Now you pay the consequences :p

Anyway, I would confront your boss unless you enjoy being stepped on for the rest of your life :D

They love you = they love you enough to not give you your promotion until there's no money left to promote you. I was in this same situation at my last job, they "loved" me and kept me around for cheap promising I'd get this other guy's job when he left. He left, they said they "weren't in a position to do anything right now" and I gave my 2 weeks and said goodbye!

I want to give my 2 weeks notice too, but I need another job first :)

Trying to find something closer to home -- it's 1.5 hours each way right now and it's a killer :(

i was "promised" a promotion 1.5 years ago
at a staff meeting last week i finally realized due to HR/structural changes in IT, it isn't going to happen

if it ain't done, don't bank on it

That won't happen :(

I emailed my boss about it today, saying I want to talk with him about it. I figure I will just say something like, if you expect me to finish projects on time when you give them to me, expect me to be on time, expect me to be flexible, how come I can't count on a promise that you made to me? It's a two way street, isn't it?

I think that will get my point across. I guess we'll play it by ear.

The VP is bs'ing you. Everyone knows the VP is a useless slob who doesn't do jack sh!t. Take it up with the president and see what he says about it. But more importantly, get something written from your direct boss first. Either way it looks like you're gonna get shafted...

1.5 hours??? i'd take a pay cut just to work closer to home, you could conceivably get over 2 hours per day back, plus be spending less on automotive expenses

At least you learned a valuable lesson.

NEXT TIME, get it in writing.

I wouldn't want to work for someone who didn't stand behind their word. Good luck in finding a better job.

I feel for you because I've been screwed over in much the same way in the past. Problem for you now is that you had to virtually beat the 5 grand out of them, they will simply not give you raises in the future to make up for it.

Some employers aren't interested in paying a fair salary, they hope you'll still stick around and put up with it. Get a better paying job somewhere else
