Buying games is for noobs. Real c64'ers buy the game books and write the code themselves. ;)

Oh man, THAT was the day where you first had to type in the code the MLC Editor I got out of this book, THEN you had to code the game. I spent two weeks coding an airplane game on that damn thing :D

It was like manually typing in 1000 lines of code that looked like this:

4235: A123FF2 324404 B2345C3 4430001 A123FF2 324404 B2345C3

i can't believe I had that kind of patience as a 12 year old.

I was a Vic20 kid myself. Then Amiga500
Oh the Amiga.... the places we went!

Me: Vic 20-->C64-->C128-->Amiga 2000. I think I still have all of them in my garage. I need to find space and hook them up. The emulators just aren't the same.

Let's not forget Adventure Construction Set. The graphics sucked but the game and concept rocked.

TRS-80 for the win!

Seconded.

Finally threw out a Video Genie (TRS80 clone) a couple of months ago. Not that I'd so much as turned it on for nearly 30 years.

The actual TRS80 disappeared ages ago, but then the video genie was better anyway as it had...built in lower case characters! Who would have dreamed such an advanced feature would even be possible - displaying lower case text on screen! Can your i7 based machine do that? (OK, I guess it can, but still),.

And people think PhysX and hardware T&L are advanced features!

Best video game OF ALL TIME.

"You explode a dessert rat into a blood sausage for 500dmg" Or something crazy like that. Memory is slipping in my old age LOL

I had it but could never play it all the way though because it would keep locking up :(

I remember those days - however, one magazine finally smartened up and released the code in numeric form - made it soooo much easier.

Those were the days - numerous pages of code to enter, having to draw your own graphs to dungeon crawl, side scrolling games, making your own games [a hell of a lot easier back then] - but the LOOOOONG waits for the tape to load. Back then it wasn't too bad as everything was slow...

A lot of the charm of those games was the great HAND DRAWN artwork on the cover and the manuals. Sometimes the manuals would actually be a story on their own.

Remember getting a CLOTH map, a metal ankh, a bound parchment manual with Ultima IV...and that was just the plain retail version. Something like that today would cost $150 for the "Ultra Super Collectors Edition." Software was a work of love back then, not money, and in most aspects it was better the old way.

I wish I could have my brain wiped of all my gaming experience and play those games like I did for the first time.

I remember the first time I played Dig Dug or Ultima better than the first time I got laid.

It is absolutely my fav game of all time, I have loaded it onto so many different devices its not even funny, the best way to find the game is to look for and apple \\e emulator, then you can find the roms and you can finally finish :)

I will be bringing back to my apt my Commodore setup. I have loads of parts and programs.

Not sure whether to use my C128D or my c64.

I also own a Buscard II cartridge which allows me to attach parallel devices like my 8050 dual drive.

I can hardly wait to run that stuff again.
