Sorry Jimbo, must have been my inferior Canadian upbringing
I'm sorry too. With all that Leftist and Socialist indoctrination you received, they had to leave out something like spelling and grammar.
If you think for a second that this is just a U.S. problem, then you are the one that needs education.

Well if PM Deiffenbaker(sp?) hadn't killed the Arrow (at the US's insistance) we would've had a real air force.

Well considering the total defence budget has been 'upped' to a whooping $7.2 billion CDN (~4.5 billion USD), I'm surprised we're anywhere! The entire army has 2-3 prepared regiments, everything else is reserve units which has equipment from the early 50's, and no newer than the early 70's. Especially for the artillery. No kidding. Our armada of tanks is 120 Leopard C1E's, which are 1960's German crap. They were an experiment of a lightly armored, agile tank. Not the right way to go. Our Air Force is a decrepped set of some 120 CF18 Hornets, of which no more than 50 are working at a time. The only thing in our entire military that is acceptable is our navy. They have very advanced frigates that are actually capable of doing something, unfortunately, navy frigates are not really needed for any recent or foreseeable wars.

The army is a decreped excuse for a rag tag band of revolutionary equipped soldiers. Its pathetic.

does your Air Force still have the Snowbird's? I have seen them at many airsho's. Great bunch. Don't tell me they have been scrapped.

We would of made 5, then the Quebecers would complain there wasn't enough French Scientists developing it, and it'd be canned. Welcome to Canada, eh?

As far as I know, Snowbirds are just show off toys.

Thats correct. The terrorists dont not threaten Canada because they are to busy exploiting it's immigration policies to try to hit the US.

They are still here. Just the Airshows have been scrapped due to high insurance costs. I was looking forward to going to our local airshow, the London International Airshow. We can't even have a Balloon Fest and our North American wide Rib Fest is threatened too.

I don't have a link handy, but I am nearly positive.

With the Canadian-American relationship as it is, one could argue we don't really need an armed force for very much anyway. I'm not saying that I agree with that position (quite the contrary actually), but that is the way successive federal governments in this country have seen it. With no real threats on the horizon there's no impetus for change either.

I'm not even sure if we have an air base on the west coast for our F/A-18 Hornets to take off and land at. It's kind of baffling that our entire air force is ~100 fighters strong, and here we are, 2nd largest country by land mass in the world...I'd actually consider the air force as a career option if I hadn't been so overwhelmingly told not to come within miles of an uniform in this country. Our submarine vessels made the news a few weeks ago for their shoddy condition, too.

I realize you probably meant to insult just this one poster, but the Canadian public school system is nothing to laugh at. 🙂 I'd put money on it being in the top 3 of the world.

And lets not forget that they took their flight training in florida, Right?

Guess thats Canada's fault too...

There just isint any winning on here with you guys, it seems like at least once a week there has to be some kind of Canada bashing goin on....

why?

Don't take it seriously. 🙂 Americans are among the most stereotyped/ridiculed groups around, but you don't hear us bitching about it.

This is the closest I could find for a link for the defence budget. It shows the miniscule amount of money being 'added' to the Defence Budget.

OH GOD. That is the one statement I am truly taking issue with in this thread.

Please read up on the Avro Arrow before making comments ANYTHING like that again. The Arrow was created for a role that was obsolete by the time the prototype made its maiden voyage. All weather interceptor? We were already in the age of ICBMs! What the hell did anyone need bomber interceptors for?

I'd love to hear how building the Arrow would have made Canada some kind of real power. The Americans did us a favour back then by nixing the project. It was money badly spent.

Nope, though you are correct in the original intent of the Arrow(it being an interceptor of long range bombers) it was capable of other duties such as Fighter, Strike Bomber, etc. It wouldn't have made Canada a Super Power, but it would have been more usefull then the junky SAM's purchased in their place.

I find it surprising that Canada can't cope with the number of troops overseas (according to that article, 1700 in Bosnia, "several hundred elsewhere"). I mean, for comparison, Finland has about 1300 peace-keepers around the world, not including the 820 soldiers in Kosovo. And Canada is considerably bigger than Finland is.

EDIT: In case you are interested, Finlands defence-budget is about 1.6 billion US dollars

lol, true, true. I can't remember how many times I've heard people describe Americans as fat, stupid, sister banging hicks that live in trailer parks. I find it kinda funny though that this is their entire view as Americans.

I think thats a little dated. Nonetheless, the Canadian defence budget has been dropping a billion every 1 or 2 years lately, so those figures are equally wrong.

We have 1,985 in Afganistan, 1699 in Bosnia, and 262 men in other small places. There is our entire capable army, with our best equipment. Our regular troops primary anti tank weapon is still the Carl Gustav. 1970's big bulky AT weapon that wouldn't do much to stop a modern tank. It could stop a T-55 or T-62 and other junky stuff the terrorists might have. The damn scopes of the Carl Gustavs had radiation on them that was dangerous to the operaters until someone noticed it after 5 years....typical Canadian goodness.

Its not a division, and I'm sorry you have a problem that we keep our royal names and connection to Britain.
