One of those services involved the hi-tech, labor-intensive skill of downloading AND installing Windows updates and Norton antivirus updates for the low, low price of $70 (right there in the store, too!). I just shook my head and laughed when he walked out of earshot. I should start my own business and advertise that I'm willing to do that for $20 less than Best Buy...rofl...
Thats $50 for the Norton, Installed for the same price you buy it. And updated. Remember these are people buying emachines that don't know exactly how to plug in all the cables to the back of it. Getting a piece of software installed for free and then updated is a great thing for them. I would say alot of knuckleheads would just install it and let it be, norton doesn't always default to auto update. Sure for us, its simple, not everyone knows even a little about computers. But to sit there and think your buddy is getting ripped off is hog wash. The tech guy selling it and installing it for the same price , I see people like you all the time, rolling your eyes at people explaining the services. Why is it so hard to get off your horse and just say " na its fine I can install it for him " and leave it at that. I don't ever try to make it sound like brain surgury to people, just you can't beat it installed for the same 50$.
The extra 20$ is for basic stuff that the average new comer PC user wouldn't know how to do, like basic MSCONFIG, update your OS, set it to autoupdate critical updates, uninstall AOL, turn on the ethernet port firewall that would be better than nothing. Its not a bad idea for the person who knows nothing, but again people like you will say to there friends once they leave," those BB guys are trying to rip you off , I can do that stuff ". Its not being ripped off its a legitimate service for dirt cheap for the new comer to PCs. Just say no thanks and let it be.
No disrespect, but try to look on the other side of the counter. Not every sales person is a idiot, but of course I see my fair share working at retail places. I even laugh sometimes and have to correct the sales people on what they are saying. Just cause you know how to do it doesn't mean people would not pay a extra twenty dollars for it to be done for them, knowledge costs.
