any good ones?

For someone looking to surf the web and do email, the celeron is not a bad choice for budget-minded folks.

No way. I'd much rather go with an Athlon XP.. these days, you can get them for about the same price.. and much better performance than a Celeron ( the Prescott based Celerons are looking better, though.. )

How much faster is an Athlon XP going to be than a celeron in outlook? 30FPS more? 1.2 emails per second faster?

You can have a BMW 525i for $49,000, or you can have a BMW M5 for $42,000... Which do you take? THey're both 4 door sedans that are comfortable, and get the job done. But why would you take the slower one?

Oh, and this thread made me join the boards. :D

ATM, I don't have any stories.. but I have the urge to go to BB and just start asking questions and play dumb.. just for laughs. I usually only goto BB for DVDs/Games/Music.. and to look at comp stuff.

I had just got off work at Amgen (big biotech firm not a computer place), and was using their gym. I overheard these two guys, probably who worked in the sciences but not computers. One was saying how his computer was running a little bit slowly and kept describing it and I knew immediatly it was spyware.

He said Best Buy told him that his config file was corrupt and all sorts of obviously made up mumbo-jumbo to scare him into wasting money on what could have been a simple ad-aware download. Unfortunatly, it was to late to save his soul (and all the money Best Buy was extorting out of him from this).

Because I like the looks of the slower one better? Who knows why people buy things. And that doesn't answer the questions I asked. How much faster is an Athlon XP going to be for normal web browsing and email?

you wanna buy a celeron over an AXP cuz it looks better? LMAO

seriously though. processors are not as multifaceted as cars are. the only the thing matters, or at least by a looooong shot the most important thing is the performance. Whether you use it or not, if it performs faster for less money, why not buy it?

edit: if you must have 30fps advantage, here you go.

No. As with cars the biggest thing that matters in a computer is the user being happy with it. If they are happy with a friggin celeron, let them have a celeron.

Performance that isn't used is like something that no one knows about, it isn't really there until you find it.

It will load windows 12 seconds faster. It will open Microsoft Word 3 seconds faster. It will open Internet Explorer 1 second faster. It will start Trillian 3 seconds faster....

Thats $50 for the Norton, Installed for the same price you buy it. And updated. Remember these are people buying emachines that don't know exactly how to plug in all the cables to the back of it. Getting a piece of software installed for free and then updated is a great thing for them. I would say alot of knuckleheads would just install it and let it be, norton doesn't always default to auto update. Sure for us, its simple, not everyone knows even a little about computers. But to sit there and think your buddy is getting ripped off is hog wash. The tech guy selling it and installing it for the same price , I see people like you all the time, rolling your eyes at people explaining the services. Why is it so hard to get off your horse and just say " na its fine I can install it for him " and leave it at that. I don't ever try to make it sound like brain surgury to people, just you can't beat it installed for the same 50$. ITS A FREE INSTALL.

The extra 20$ is for basic stuff that the average new comer PC user wouldn't know how to do, like basic MSCONFIG, update your OS, set it to autoupdate critical updates, uninstall AOL, turn on the ethernet port firewall that would be better than nothing. Its not a bad idea for the person who knows nothing, but again people like you will say to there friends once they leave," those BB guys are trying to rip you off , I can do that stuff ". Its not being ripped off its a legitimate service for dirt cheap for the new comer to PCs. Not everyone has broadband, sometimes updates for these new preinstalled XP home OS's need up to 30mbs of updates, imagine that with mom and pops 3k transfer download speeds. Just say no thanks and let it be.

No disrespect, but try to look on the other side of the counter. Not every sales person is a idiot, but of course I see my fair share working at retail places. I even laugh sometimes and have to correct the sales people on what they are saying. Just cause you know how to do it doesn't mean people would not pay a extra twenty dollars for it to be done for them, knowledge costs.

Geeks are filled with angst. Just let us vent here where norms don't see it. ;)

I've got a couple of new stupid user stories, but I don't want to thread hijack anymore than I already have. ;)

Sure I am a geek, I'm cool with that, I got a lady I'm not trying to impress. I work on PC's in my spare time sure. Guess I am a geek. But imagine people trying to tell you , you are ripping off there mom, dad, brother, friend ,co worker. I see all to much, its the means to get it set up quickly, sure its not networking a airport but its a simple price for a simple service. Period.

Again please don't take offense, I say these works calm with no hate. :)

new story: Once I heard a salesman in Futureshop saying that hyperthreading was intels' response to the
Power Mac G5. I then thought to myself and realized that HT came out before the G5.

i was at computer rennasance looking for older scsi stuff ( they may be stupid but its a great place to find older parts) and was looking at the cdroms when i spied a scsi one (id terminals) i told a salesmoron could i plz have a look at the scsi cdrom, he looked at me funny and opened the case and took it out saying "This isnt scuzzy looking, its a nice looking 52x (was a 12x) ATA133 cd rom. i asked him how many pins ide had and he said 40 then i asked him how many pins the drive had , he proceeded to count them and replied 50. I said thankyou fo ryour help and left. i actually should have bought it, it was only 13.99.

Then i was at BB the day after thanksgiving and stopped to look at the $200 emachines ( i wanted the hard drive and cdburner and use the rest as a folder or something) when i overhear a salemoron telling this couple that was looking for a new computer for there son to play GTA:VC on. he proceeded to tell them the best computer for that "bus intensive game" was no other than the compaq in the Wavemaster case. THey apparently agreed so he went to look for one. I slipped over and told them that this HP with an amd 2000+ and a 5200 will be more than enough to run it. then thanked me and took it up to the register. There price? just $600 with a monitor compared to the 2500? it is for that comcrap.

o and i have been "escorted" out of BB for helping some guy find a decent vid card ( i was looking for one myself)

I'm shopping for laptops and just yesterday a Fry's salesguy tried to convince me that a Mobile Radeon 9200 would be good enough, after I specifically told him I only wanted a Mobile 9700.

I was in Circuit City once looking for a hard drive on sale. Right next to me there was this service person trying to sell this woman a 9800 Pro. She asked why she should buy the "Built By ATI" model instead of the cheaper Sapphire alternative. He thought for a bit and said that it's design was more optimized for the chip.

Ah well...

I don't blame the salespeople too much, since it does require a bit of enthusiasum to delve deeply into technical computer information. But I think the stores need to hire people with real experience and knowledge.

Once I was in a CompUSA and saw a great AMD64 3000+ machine for less than $1000. For the heck of it I asked a salesperson when the store got the model. I forget exactly what he said, but the date he gave was before the 3000+ came out!

Oh yeah, and he also tried to sell my family a Pentium 4 3.0E "that will be a great investment for the future!"

I was at Best Buy once to purchase a M6805 for my friend, and the sales person could not get a DVD to play in Power DVD because he didn't press play.

Was at best buy 'bout 2 mos ago. was looking at a notebook, but the power supply was not connected.
Ask the salesman to fire it up. He came back was the adapter ad started it. It took about 5 min to boot
with parsing error line 4??. he goes it's kinda cool in here because of air conditioning. kinda like a copy machine it needs to warm up. but when it does it flys.

When I asked the guy about a couple features he was pretty dumbfounded. He tried to sell me a 2-yr warranty on the $850 laptop for $299. he said for $399 I could get a 3-yr warranty on it. I replied to him that in less than 3-years that laptop would not be worth $399. Yet he argued that laptops "retained" thier value more than desktops. I then told the guy that I would not pay half the value of the laptop for a warranty when it comes with a 1-yr warranty from HP anyhow. He persisted even still saying that lightning could destroy my laptop and I could have it replaced or "If a virus destroys the hard drive" then it would be covered. I then got frustrated and annoyed with his lack of technology knowhow and told him how a virus COULD NOT destroy a hard drive only the data contained on it and if I was worried about that I'd buy some anti-virus software for a lot cheaper instead. He told me they got service calls all the time for destroyed hard drives due to viruses even with having anti-virus software and that it could end up costing me a lot of money (not like the $399 warranty wouldn't!). Eventually he left me alone and stopped trying to sell the warranty but nearly a year later I've gotten at least 10 different letters in the mail telling me it's my "last chance" to buy the warranty. I absolutely hate that they annoy people to death with this junk. Sometimes CC has decent deals but the hassle you have to go through just to buy their products is just ridiculous.

I hate how they try to sell you a warranty just for the hell of it. I was buying an LCD monitor at officemax, and it saids in BIG BOLD letters that it had a 1 year warranty and the guy (who had told me there was DVI after checking to see if it had it under the base of the stand) told me that there was only a 90 day warranty.

I asked him if it was brand new, and he saids yes. And goes on and tries to sell me a $150 warranty plan.

Last Saturday at CompUSA:

CUSA guy to customer: "You must have a hyper-threaded cpu to use any video card with "FX" in the name. If you don't have a hyper-threaded cpu, the pc won't even boot with an FX card installed".

I said that once too... but then I bought one... Cause I got it for $40 but it came with 256mb of ram 60gb hdd, and a dvd-rom all wrapped up in an hp case. all for $40. otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
