Sadly, we are going to see a huge spike in suicides in South Korea.

This is an embarrassing event for everyone involved.
I can't even imagine what the parents are going through.

No, this is totally incorrect. The South Korean president is not a figurehead. That would be the same as saying the US president is a figure head. If anything, the prime minister is the figurehead. The Korean president has the most power. Korea is not the UK.

The prime minister resigning is mostly symbolic but probably necessary. People are outraged so someone had the take some of the blame. The coward captain and the crew will pay for their crime. There are pictures of the crew calming walking past room full of trapped children to exit the ship. These assholes had enough time to change out of their ship work clothes to regular civilian clothes so they wouldn't draw attention to themselves as they walked off the ship. Meanwhile, the other passengers had no idea the crew had abandoned the ship and had to be later rescued by helicopters and other rescue ships in more extreme fashion.
 
A Korean news station broadcasted parts of cellphone video footage recorded by one of the trapped student who died. The entire recording is 15 minutes long spread out probably over 45 minutes or more. The news station edited the video by blocking out the faces and masking the original voice for the families but it gives extremely clear picture what exactly went on in the final moments. There's time stamp from the phone so you can follow the events from when the emergency call was made to the final death. It's clear from the video that the kids had no clue how bad the situation was. You can see and hear them putting on their life jackets and waiting. They're happy and carefree. And 20-30 minutes later you can hear the public announcement not to move and stay put. And another announcement about 10 minutes later to again stay put and not move. These kids had more than enough time to evacuate. These kids had no clue. They could've escaped if they had known like the crew. It's perfectly clear from the cellphone video and audio. :'(

I figured with that many kids they would be able to recover plenty of video from cell phones. That is just f'ing sad. As a parent of two teenagers I feel so bad for those parents.

Everybody negligent needs to pay, any crew member that didn't stay to evacuate, any of those responsible for stuffing that thing with too much cargo, and any of the idiots that refitted those upper floors making the ship unstable without extensive testing.

Just happened to run across this after I posted. Basically they ran a test to simulate a cell phone under the same conditions as the bottom of the Indian Ocean for a week and were able to retrieve data off of it. This will be invaluable to study the Sewol and MH370 disaster.

I don't know whether to be pissed or envious. A boat sinks at no fault of their PM and yet he takes responsibility for it and resigns. Meanwhile, we live in a country with a rich tradition of pointing fingers and making excuses when things turn south. And I'm not talking specifically about the President, I'm speaking broadly about the majority of politicians here.

Resignation can also be used to cut losses.
 
News have released another cellphone video. This one taken by a girl around 9:45 am. The helicopter have arrived and most of the crew members like the captain have already left the ship. The girls are saying they want to be rescued too and they are in this room. Please hurry. The broadcasted public announcement mentions to make sure the cords on the lifejacket are secure and to be ready. There's no mention to abandon the ship.

It's a really, really dangerous, unstable situation. In some ways those kids were doomed as soon as she got over on her rail. The problem is these passenger vessels are full of holes above the water line. Tip one over on its side and it floods and rolls. The only way to save them would have been to get them in jackets and get them topside right away. I don't know what the chain of events was, or why the captain did not feel he should order everyone on deck earlier. What I do know is that once she was lying on her side entering the hull would have been close to suicidal.
 
One good thing is that most Koreans use Samsung and LG phones which all have separate SD card slot for things like video. These footages were all retrieved from the MicroSD memory cards.
