surprised there wasn't a thread on this already... this sounds pretty tragic, almost 300 people -- mostly kids -- missing/dead.

it sounds like the ship ran aground and the crew told all the passengers to stay put. meanwhile, the captain and crew got the fuck out of there.

The parents of hundreds of children missing after Wednesday's ferry accident off the coast of South Korea have accused the captain of the vessel of abandoning passengers after it emerged that he and six other crew members were among the first to leave the ship after it started to sink.

The captain, Lee Joon-seok, who is reportedly in his 60s, escaped from the 6,835-ton Sewol just 40 minutes after the vessel apparently ran aground and started to list severely...

Distraught parents who travelled to the southern island of Jindo to be near the scene of the accident reacted angrily to reports that the ship's passengers, including 325 pupils from Danwon high school in the Seoul suburb of Ansan, had initially been told to stay in their cabins rather than head to the emergency exits.

A crew member said an evacuation order had been issued 30 minutes after the accident, but several survivors said they did not hear any instructions to abandon ship. There was speculation that the order was not relayed to passengers on the public address system.

Some relatives threw water at the South Korean prime minister, Chung Hong-won, during a visit to the Jindo gymnasium. "How dare you come here with your chin up?" one screamed at him. "Would you respond like this if your own child was in that ship?"

Aren't hulls supposed to be compartmentalized and able to be sealed off nowadays? I thought I watched that on the history channel or something.

Is it Korean maritime tradition for the captain to be the first one off the ship during an evac?

Double hulls, compartments, there are all sorts of approaches to making hulls more resistant to flooding. Rubycon could probably comment from an expert's point of view. All I really know is that whatever we do, they still sink if you rip a big enough hole, or roll them over, or break them in half, or pop a hatch and take enough water in that way. Bottom line is that a steel vessel floating on the water isn't supposed to be there, and unless sustained by human care and effort it won't be for long.

From what I've heard it certainly seems like they struck something, or were struck. I don't know the depth there, but it was deep enough for the ship to sink in. But its really all speculation. A ship can sink because the stuffing box fails and water gets into the engine room, if the situation is mishandled or a bunch of other unlikely things go wrong too.

It's probably going to be some crazy North Koreans being sociopathic jackasses who caused this.

Hasn't the North killed a fair amount of South Koreans despite the "ceasefire" peace? I wonder what it would take for them to declare war on the North for all the shit they pull.

the fact that the captain was one of the first off the ship is ridiculous.

Further ridiculousness:
- Survivors claim no safety instruction. Also lifejackets on 4th floor, but not 3rd floor
- Only ONE lifeboat deployed

Last I heard, people were saying that the crew told everyone to stay put and not bail..

Note to self: if captain tells you to stay, grab a life jacket and a prime seat in the first boat.?

I hope they have their passenger count off and 300 people didn't just die in a first world country taking a damn ferry.

Yep, lessons learned from Italy + Korea: when captain says stay, follow the goddamn captain off the ship.

I read that the ferry made a hard turn to port and caused some cargo to shift and destabilize the vessel.

If the captain did that, don't jail him, send him to North Korea.

I think when chaos hits, its confusing and they thought that people moving might have caused the ship to tip, so they said stay put. When that didn't work, the captain got scared and bailed. He can't tell everyone to leave, because they would crowd the exits and that might result in his own death. So was he right or wrong? He's alive and hundreds are dead. So did he win or lose? Would you let yourself get trapped on a sinking ship and willingly drown in a terrifying, cold, wet death to save strangers? Of course I would. I'd jump at the opportunity to off myself for others, but would you?

The lesson that's is reaffirmed here is that in any type of emergency, natural disaster, etc. do not simply listen to authorities. Do whatever you have to to get your loved ones and yourself out of danger. Make your own decisions and you will probably survive.

Just heard on news that there are reports that the first lifeboats to launch were the ones the captain and crew took... If true, way to go. Couldn't even give anyone else a delayed start.
