Toss up. Im fine with going either way, I think Maxtor makes very reliable hard drives, and the IBM 60GXP is looking good. As long as you steer clear of the older 75GXP model, you'll be fine.

How old is that Maxtor? They make great drives. I beat on mine big-time and they never complain. I had a WD, but it was noisy. Sounded like a tin can full of marbles. I get another Maxtor.

My vote is on the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 (ATA 100, 7200rpm)...because my past expirence with IBM hard drives is not good. Plus the Maxtor is considerably cheaper and the performance compared with the IBM is VERY similar. Finally, you don't see many Maxtor dying threads on these boards but plenty of Western Digital and IBM's....

At present both IBM and Maxtor makes very good drive. And yes 60GXps are the newer ones. 75 GXP was the older ones and very good regarding the data transfer rate but had a high failure rates. 60 GXP seems better although it will take some more time to acertain the failure rate.

Actually, at NewEgg the Maxtor costs $1 more than the IBM(both 40gig 7200rpm). I think the Maxtor is $115 and the IBM is $114. :)

<< hmm i'd say around... 2 years? maybe 1? >>

Maxtor's come with a standard 3 year manufacturers warranty... so check the date on it.. if it is less than 3 years old you can get it replaced.. so you don't have to worry about a choice.. I had a 17 that failed and got it replaced.. have not had any problems with that or any of my other Maxtors.

You can either pay up ahead and they will send you out one ASAP and will refund you when you send the old one back. You can do all this right off of their website.

Oh really? Well here in Canada, I can get the Maxtor for exact $50 cheaper than the IBM

Order the maxtor from staples, it's cheaper that way. Pricematch to the cheapest place you can find, and throw in the ultra ata 100 card, than use one of the popular coupons. Also claim your warranty from maxtor.

<< Splice: the WD 80GB is only 5400 rpm :v( >>

WD's 80GB drive IS 7200RPM. Maxtor's 80GB drive is 5400RPM. ;)

Nevermind spinrate - its all about who packs the data denser to make better seek times and transfer rates! ;)

I have two Maxtor 60 gig drives. I love them, havent had a problem with them yet [knock on wood]. They are only 5400rpm but they are fine for my mp3, movies, etc etc.

Damn you people...I got a 75GXP about a year ago and every time I see one of these threads I keep wondering if today will be the day the drive dies. :frown: Stop making me nervous! :p

Yep, I got the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 and it's sweet. Also came with a free Maxtor UDMA100 IDE controller card and Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE.

I bought a maxtor once (1.6g) and the stupid thing kept dying... and i had to keep paying shipping fees to RMA it... i finally just sold it and died on the guy I sold it to after the warranty ran out.

Moral of the story: warranty doesn't mean much when you have to still have to sink cash into shipping, & i'll stay away from maxtors!

Yeah, but Grant, ya gotta admit that was a LOOOONG time ago (1.6GB? That has to have been a few years!). In any case, just now I realized I have to get a bigger HD for my sister's rig...so I'm also wondering..60GXP or Maxtor...both same price from NewEgg...oh decisions decisions...
