Yeah, but Grant, ya gotta admit that was a LOOOONG time ago (1.6GB? That has to have been a few years!). In any case, just now I realized I have to get a bigger HD for my sister's rig...so I'm also wondering..60GXP or Maxtor...both same price from NewEgg...oh decisions decisions...

Ya that was back in 97 or so... it surprises me that everyone goes on about maxtor performance & reliability cuz back then they seemed to be the cheapest junky harddrives you could get.

Oh well, i guess companies can improve their quality, I have to admit they never gave me any trouble at all about RMA but still my fav. hard drive ever was a seagate medallist pro...

Well well well...see my ominous post a bit above? Well, yesterday, the 45GB 75GXP finally started to croak on me. First Win98 hung when booted into. Then when I restarted, the drive wouldn't show up when searching for IDE peripherals when first turned on. Then when I restarted again, and I let it ScanDisk, surface errors were found. Yay! Now I can't even boot into '98 (my system was a dual-boot, Win2k died a while back...gee, I think I know why now). It's time to move the HD to a friend's system, move what I can onto his HD and save it, then start with a fresh one. How unfortunate. Those 45GB drives really do suck.

Editted for spelling mistake. 😛

dude like someone else said, call maxtor my 30gig just died on me 🙁, i am having one shipped and should be here tuesday, didnt give me any hassel, this is the first maxtor drive that has ever gone bad on me

I thought my Maxtor 13gb drive died on me this week.

It would lock up my system whenever I tried defragging.
Copying to or from was extreeeeemely slow.
I backed up and formatted hoping that it would fix things. It didnt.

It turns out that my drive couldnt handle the FSB I set.
I lowered it back down to 133 and things are running fine now.

I have had 3 maxtor drives, and at some point or another, I have had problems with all of them. I also have a 75gxp, and have never had problems with it. I think the rules may be working in reverse for me, but I would just go ahead and get a 60gxp.

I have similar experiences with both the Maxtor and the IBM. The dfference between them isn't that big, so go for the Maxtor with the lower price tag.

All drives can die. Some people like one, some like another. If used properly, all will last a long time. Okay, maybe not Fujistu or Western Digital.
