Nothing ever "requires" the use of a dongle
Used to use 3D Studio which required a dongle. Also professional grade CAD programs like Solid Edge. hate those dongles.
@home gave me a USB->ethernet Dongle. Then the installer went ahead, disconnected my network and installed through my existing LAN card. I had to install the dongle myself.

Yes, but Xircom still has a LOT of independence. They have the same CEO, and board of directors. The merger was only so Xircom would have access to the silicon needed to start making miniPCI boards since laptop makers are offering built in NIC and modem connectivity now.
