Just because you can go longer between changes doesn't mean you need to.
Besides, under severe duty (which is all non-highway) conditions, synth may help your protect your engine better. But the additive package will still break down at a good clip. It's a small price to pay for a smooth running high mileage engine, especially a turbo.

the TBN of a good group 4/5 synthetic will easily stay at a good value from 10,000 km or more, as long as the oil filter is changed at decent intervals.

Yup. It's your oil filter and your driving conditions that determine how long your oil lasts, not so much which oil you use.. Although there certainly are better and worse ones.

I recomend AMSOil, only because I have experience with them, and they happily publish their oil's specifications. You don't see that with many other oil companies. If I can't find specs on the oil, it's the same as all the specs being Zero.

They are expensive, though.

I checked Walmart, AutoZone, Target, KMart, and Checkers. The lowest price I can find is $3.59/quart at Target.

If your talking about synthetic oil, that's a pretty good price for it. I usually pick mine up at Costco, $23.49 for a case of 6 quarts 10W-40 Mobile 1 Synthetic.

Yeah, it's for Mobil 1 Supersyn synthetic oil.

Look. Your oil filter is what keeps your oil clean. You could be using some experimental oil developed by the government to make cars last 1,000,000 miles and it wouldn't matter one bit if your oil filter isn't doing its job.

You're doing yourself a great disservice by buying the cheapest oil filters and air filters you can buy. These two filters, along with properly scheduled oil changes, are the only things keeping your engine from becomming a paperweight. Is it really worth saving a few dollars per scheduled maintenance on your 25,000$ car?

Sorry to have to corrct you but STP filter is way better then a Fram. So price is not the only thing to look at. Nw if by cheapest you menat quality then OK, Fram sucks and STP, Tech2000, and some others are good.

I have been running a shop for 14 years, and a mechanic for 25 years. I am personal friends with the Northeast rep for Valvoline Oil ( covers alot of states).
He told me 2 interesting things:
1) all of the aftermarker filters are manufactured by 3 major companies, so most of you saying " x filter is better than y filter: are probably comparing apples to apples 🙂
2) Oil filters plug very quickly, and usually the last 1000 miles before your next change, you are bypassing the filter altogether ( oil pump has a bypass valve built in for this very reason, so as not to starve the engine ).
I was told that this was testing results from Ashland Oil Corp, parent company of Valvoline.
Take this info FWIW.

I change my oil every 3k but my sister went 60k without changing her oil on her sentra, she then sold the car at 80k (with one oil change) she never had a problem with that car. The car did start smoking at about 90k though.

Kinda makes you wonder if you changed you oil every 10k would it really make that much of a difference.:Q

60k. Now that's just inappropriate. Still, it seems that most who have done research on oil and don't have money to make by selling oil products say that the 3k is blatant overkill for oil changes.
