I still say spend the money. You don't want a cheap part on your car when it comes to any point of lubricating your engine.

Another vote for rebadged Wixes... Mitsubishi OE is just Wix anywho... I prefer synthetic element filters if I can find them for my car even though I change my oil & filter every ~3k miles anywho.

I'm currently using Fram in a 4.3L V-6 pushrod engine and a 2.4L I-4 ohc engine. I hear valve train noise of course on the ohc engine, but also hear it upon startup on the pushrod engine which is quite unexpected. I will change filter manufacturer on the next oil change to see if the noise goes away on the 4.3L engine. This thread is very informative.

I've got a few turbo dodges and one of the other turbo dodge owners, Russ Kinze, did his own oil filter study a while back. In one car I run Mobil 1 oil and filter, other cars get Wix, AC/Delco, or Motorcraft depending on whats handy.

There's a difference between OEM and aftermarket filters????

:D

Actually, not really. For example, Mopar filters used to be made by Honeywell/FRAM. I believe Arvin Meritor/Purolator is now making the Mopar filters.

That oil study lists some facts like that. Wix, FRAM, and Purolator seem to be the big three in making OEM filters.

As for me, I use whatever my local Dodge dealer puts on there. :)

I mechanic friend of mine had the same problem. I don't know how the fram filter caused it, but after changing it to another filter it slowly went away.
But give it a try. Go with a STP(autozone) or Tech2000(wal-mart) and see what happens.

I go with the Mobil 1 filter, expensive as hell, but I'm way picky about what goes into my car :)

For my 93 sentra I use non-synthetic valvoline maxlife and a $3 fram oil filter I get from walmart (let me know if I can get a cheaper filter hehe). For the maxima I will be using mobil 1 on the next oil change and a nissan oem filter for it which costs $6.

The anti-drain valve on Fram filters is know not to be very good. The a-d valve keeps oil from running out of the filter back down to the pan. If it leaks it takes much longer for the oil pressure to come up to normal pressure due to having to refill the oil filter. The lower oil pressure causes the valve train noise.

A good article to read for all even though it is written for the SHO.

It will. My mom's 2.4 L Volvo engine (with 130,000 miles) made noise upon start-up. I changed the Fram oil filter with a different brand during an oil change, and the problem went away immediately.

Fram is the devil.

I usually do too. I've got a Fram in now, as I ran out of Nissan ones. My new stash should be here Friday. Its very importnamt to have a quality filter with a good anti-drainback valve.

I use the stock Nissan filter. $5, and works great. I heard aftermarket filters sucks because they get clogged much faster than factory ones, so the oil bypass valve gets open and your oil runs through the engine unfiltered.

Nissan oil filter + Mobil 1 synthetic = good stuff. I change oil every 3-4k miles with that combo.

what's the point of changing your SYNTHETIC oil every 3-4k miles? it's a waste of money if you change it that often.

I use various brands in auto parts stores for my Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Intrepid. For my Nissan Altima, I use Nissan OEM oil filters.

Just because you can go longer between changes doesn't mean you need to.
Besides, under severe duty (which is all non-highway) conditions, synth may help your protect your engine better. But the additive package will still break down at a good clip. It's a small price to pay for a smooth running high mileage engine, especially a turbo.

By the way, do you guys know where to find Mobil 1 oil at a great price?

I checked Walmart, AutoZone, Target, KMart, and Checkers. The lowest price I can find is $3.59/quart at Target.

If your talking about synthetic oil, that's a pretty good price for it. I usually pick mine up at Costco, $23.49 for a case of 6 quarts 10W-40 Mobile 1 Synthetic.

LOL... Most of you people talk about oil and oil filters as if they're some kind of strange voodoo. ;)

Look. Your oil filter is what keeps your oil clean. You could be using some experimental oil developed by the government to make cars last 1,000,000 miles and it wouldn't matter one bit if your oil filter isn't doing its job.

You're doing yourself a great disservice by buying the cheapest oil filters and air filters you can buy. These two filters, along with properly scheduled oil changes, are the only things keeping your engine from becomming a paperweight. Is it really worth saving a few dollars per scheduled maintenance on your 25,000$ car?

I didn't think so.

serious question, but i always hear valve train noise on my OHC motor and you say it's normal, why do you say that?
