What filter would you guys suggest for a 2000 Chevy S10 4 cylinder? On my cars I've always used Ford filters, so I'm kinda out of the loop on what's good for GM vehicles.

Also, my brother seems to think Fram filters are good (because they're expensive), how should I go about explaining how terrible they are?

Fram filters are expensive? The ones I used on my Jeep and my old pickup were about $5 IIRC. Also, I refuse to believe that Fram is as bad as some people say. I've use them every oil change on both of my vehicles, and my parents use Fram on their cars as well.

Go with Wix or Napa Gold (same thing) best price/performance oil filters out there.
The supertech brand wal mart sells aren't bad either.
Just don't buy fram.

A little more expensive ones are Purolator PureOne (not the crappy low end one), Mobile1, K&N.

Fram is junk. They cost to much and are poorly built.

Use any filter that is not made by honeywell (compnay that owns fram). You can use the cheap filter at wal-mart and that be better then Fram. I use teh pro-tec filtesr from rockauto.com. They are the same filter as Napa's silver line as they are both made by Wix.

Ended up getting the AC Delco filter. Dirt cheap and if anything gets the job done, this has to be it.

They're cheaply made (from what I've read cardboard bodies and terrible anti-drainback valves) and more expensive than comparable filters. Don't assume I'm an imbecile, because I'm not but my brother is.

I work for honeywell (aerospace, not automotive) and won't use a fram. The don't cost that much but I've had issues with them in my vehicles. I think it was one of their gas filters that started spewing gas everywhere.

Usually something above is said..."I am an engineer for Honeywell..."

otherwise you sound like that other guy here talking he understands the banking industry while working in the copy room.

What to you do for Honeywell and does Fram even make an application that would be an option.

also not all Fram's are equal.

You are right. Some are more crappy while others are only slightly crappy.

There is no good reason to use a fram oil filter. There are better filters that cost the same or even less.

AC Delco / Mobil 1 / Fram are all good .. On my GM car a 1999 it gets Fram 2 or 3 times per year, except if it needs an oil change during the cold weather, when I have the dealer do it for $29 ... then it gets an AC Delco filter .. As to oil I only run Castrol or Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in my engine.
Never had any issues caused by the oil filter.

Factory filters are generally better, although it really doesn't make much difference. Use a GM/Delco filter, or use a Motorcraft if you can find one. Wix is fine, also.

Don't recommend a Fram, unless it's their higher-grade line of filters.

Personally I can agree about that last statement...however; if one is ever in a bind some Frams can be substituted.

In reality though most are changing their oil so often and babying their cars so much probably no oil filter would be fine.

IMHO the 3000 mile oil change a ridiculous interval for almost anyone and purely created by the oil change places. I don't know of any factory spec that states this as an suggested interval for even severe duty applications.

I suppose if one only had Fram to go with as a choice the only Fram filter one should consider is the tough guard, sames inside and out it's the only one that is almost decent. However considering those are like $13 each (at least around here) I would surely get something better for the price.

While you may have never had a problem with them, Fram filters and Good in the same sentence is never true. All of their filter are just paper and cardboard in shell you can get better filters for just an extra $2-3 more from what Fram usually charges.

I agree with that as well. 5000miles for most cars/light trucks is easy for todays oils and filters. I do close to 10k with syn on 2 cars and 5k on reg. havoline/motorcraft/whatever is on sale oil on my Mazda "Ranger" B4000.

Fram is junk, Mobil1 is too restrictive. I like the older style supertech but the new ones are hit and miss. Wix and Napa gold are good.
