8.6% and a state income tax in Louisiana.

Because of this high tax, I buy most of my stuff online. Food and clothes are about all I buy locally. Food is also taxed the full 8.6%.

DE here as well :D

One of the few redeeming factors of living in Oregon.

Then again, I would gladly ditch the income tax in favor of a sales tax...

I would to but unfortunately higher taxes lead people to aviod paying them. look at NY and the stupid smoking tax. NY raises the tax on CIgs to astronomical level and people have found away around it. they buy the smokes online. People still smoke and taxes aren't collected.

A national sales tax would do alot of the same. Stores would be setup off-shore and would beat in the instore prices by 15-20% again tax revenue lost.

I am all for a flat"er" tax where we eleimnate many of the deductions and have a simple form that everyone can easily fill out for the return.

Standard deduction
Kid deduction
House deduction
NO MARIDGE PENALTY
RETIREMENT DEDUCTION

Perhaps capital gains and losses as well.

THe income tax form should be no longer than one page,

Bob Taft = teh sux0r

What's the point of having a Republican in office, if he jacks up the taxes? If I get U.S. citizenship, then I will be voting for Jerry Springer in 2005.

8.25% in California. Our Governor Grey Davis wants to possibly raise it up to 10%. Hopefully he will be kicked out of office before he does any more damage to our state. Vehicle registration is going to almost triple next year. It will cost close to $1000 to register my SUV next year.

Does the VAT really apply to everything? I will be studying in London this fall semester and we were told that if we wanted to save money, we shouldn't eat out at restaurants too often because of the VAT, but they never told us it applied to anything beyond restaurants. Hmmm... this trip may be more expensive than I thought.

I dunno... I kinda like having paved roads to drive on. And garbage collection. And a sewer system.

I like knowing that when I dial 911, an ambulance, or a police car, or a fire truck, will show up at my door within minutes.

I like knowing that my children will get an education.

No, our system is not perfect. Far from it. But given the choice between property taxes and waste, or no taxes and no government services, I'll pay my property taxes.

FL it's 6%. And locked as an amendment, so, requires voter approval to raise it. Bush tried to get an ammendment passed to 'lower it', I think to 5% on most things. Of course by lowering it he also was including sales tax on services (labor) which previously was not taxed. It was supposed to save the avg citizen $x each year. Yeah, right.

Fortunately it did not pass, or it never made it to vote, I don't recall, I just know it hasn't changed.

California sales tax is not 8.25%. Sales tax in California varies by city and county. You can look up your city here. Here in Sacramento it's 7.75%. In some palces it's as high as 8.5%, but in other's it's as low (relatively speaking) as 7.25%.

If you are referring to me....then you are a dumbass since I am a moderate.

Otherwise nevermind.

Funny, in every discussion I've had with you, you've leaned pretty far left.

But then, most hardcore liberals consider themselves "moderate." It must be a shame thing...
Or most Ultra Conservatives consider anyone who isn't part of their luntatic fringe Hardcore Liberals. Must be that paranoia thing.

Thank gawd I hardly qualify, right?

Red, you know better. Calling me "ultra conservative" is like calling Ashcroft a Libertarian. :p

NYC people still have 8.5% ... doesn't anyone here realize the amount of retail that goes on there ?! They could make up that much more on the budget if they just make it .25% more, like here. Tourists will still purchase.

It's 8.625 in the city

Keep in mind that certain products have no tax.

I really hate the Conservative goverment for introducing the GST. They've basically prevented themselves from ever winning a majority government in the future. Unless of course the Liberal, CA, and NDP pull crazy stunts.

Doh, for some reason I thought the GST was only 6%.

The GST is actually a good tax or at least what taxes it replaced were far worse. The major difference between the Pre-GST taxes and the GST is who "pays" and it's visibility.
