As a habitual pedestrian I wish they would enact this law here. I've lost count of how many times idiots on their cellphones have almost run me over.

If it's important, pull the fuck over, otherwise stay the fuck off your phone while driving.

You were probably jaywalking.

Were you crossing at a crosswalk where the light was green? Or are you one of those peds that thinks that it's okay for them to just cross anywhere anytime?

Crossing at a crosswalk with a green light. I'm not a moron like some of the drivers.

KT

Edit: obviously if I was jaywalking, then it's my own damn fault.

I'll talk on my phone, but not in traffic or on the highway. I also don't hold conversations, I don't think I've been on the phone for more than 45 seconds at a time while driving. =/

Well you never know, I've seen plenty of pedestrians do stupid stuff. Walk right out in front of me, no crosswalk, no indication, just bam start walking across a road where I have to brake to avoid hitting them. It should be legal to mow them down, but then again they aren't worth the damage to my car.

No arguments here, I've seen many a stupid pedestrian in my day.

Once I was driving on a highway. It is divided in the center by cement barriers, but has thick bushes all along as well. I was in the far left lane doing about 70MPH when two guys popped out of the bushes and ran across the highway. I had to slam on my brakes and the person behind me almost hit me and I barely missed the bastards.

Who would think that pedestrians would come popping out of bushes on a highway?

I don't see a problem with talking on the phone while driving - it's not like my other hand is doing anything anyway. If something happens and I need to drop my phone and react, well then I'll do so. I also have no problem telling someone to hang on for a bit while I'm driving if I'm going through something which requires extra attention.

most people cant handle the concentration split. the problem isnt the physical phone, its the focus of your concentration. people seem to think that they can get on the freeway in stop and go rush hour and conduct business that requires most of their attention to get done. that takes your focus away from the task at hand, driving. i rarely answer my phone while driving, and when i do it is to tell them ill call back when i find a place to pull off the road or get back to my office.

Perhaps I should say that I don't have a problem with it if the person can handle it. I'm certainly not going to have conversations which would take a lot of thinking power - more like stuff about hey meet you here at 8, blah blah type crap.

The problem with the state-wide ban on cell phones while driving is that there is a huge difference between closing a business deal while driving in downtown Chicago at 5:00 and asking my buddy if he wants to meet for a beer at 7pm while driving in rural IL. Common sense would dictate that one of these is more dangerous than the other and should be treated as such.

Dumbest law ever.

only slightly less dumb than doing anything other than driving while on the road. You are in control of a 2 ton hunk of metal at high speeds (compared to walking). Driving deserves your respect and full attention. You can wait to find out what color panties your dial-a-wank is wearing.

I am sorry but no i can't wait. That is one reason why i am currently violating the law. I don't like the headset, so basically will take a chances that i will get $20 ticket which is no big deal.

And this is why they should take licenses away for anyone caught violating this law.

+1

It's idiots like this that me -- normally a libertarian by nature -- want the government to yank the drivers license for morons caught violating this law, and add some jail time for those violating it more than one.

Yeah yeah, everyone says "not me, I'm a perfectly safe driver even when I'm talking on the phone!". Newsflash: no, you are not. No matter what you do, the fact is you are using one hand to hold the phone, meaning it's not on the steering wheel where it's supposed to be, and you are focusing your attention on the conversation instead of on the road.

Who here drive with both hands grip the steering wheel...
The way I see it, the laws will not make the road safer, it is just another way the state to get more money. As for distraction while driving, people do a lot of stuffs that distract them while they drive, i.e. eating, drinking, change radio etc. Why don't they create a law banning those but choose cell? Easy picking that's all. And yes, WA enacts this law on 07/01/08

I don't use both hands on the wheel when I'm not doing anything else.

And god forbid you drive a manual. What, you want I should surgically add a 3rd hand?
