Ohio couple get 8 years in in son's cancer death

The parents of an 8-year-old boy who died from Hodgkin lymphoma after suffering for months from undiagnosed swollen glands were sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday following their guilty pleas to denying him medical treatment.

Attorneys for Monica Hussing, 37, and William Robinson Sr., 40, had said the parents had financial problems and tried to get checkups for their son but couldn't afford it.

that's bullshit. not that they were sentenced to jail. fuck them.

but the fact they couldn't get any help for the kid. they didn't look. there are plenty of places that will help. they could have just taken him to the hospital. they could have done something.

they didnt that's why they are in jail. NOt because they are poor.

Prosecutors say that while the boy was suffering, the parents claimed financial hardship but paid $87 to have a pit bull treated for fleas. Hussing's defense attorney, John Luskin, said the dog belonged to Hussing's parents and her parents paid for the treatment.

yeah they were poor eh?

Something doesn't jive here, why didn't social services help them? Why did a free clinic tell them they needed to pay $180?

Yeah, this sounds like a clear case of neglect by the parents here. I can see how our current healthcare system could fail the kid, but the parents are by far the biggest culprits here.

Nothing is truly 'free', even at a free clinic. I know people who are poor, and some of these places insist to try and squeeze blood from a turnip. They have to for the most part due to low public funding levels.

Shrug, I don't really care about that part. They had over $80 for the dog and if my child is in that kind of pain and/or suffering from something that may be life threatening I would steal the other $100. I would be much happier facing the theft charges than watching my child die having done absolutely nothing to try and prevent it.

If you had actually read the entirety of the article you linked, you'd understand that this conclusion doesn't hold any water. These people had options. This was an obvious case of neglect.

McOwned never reads much in any of the articles he links, just the parts that he tries to make fit with his opinion.

Most of them use a sliding scale based on income. They might've looked at the couple's income and said for a bed, doctor, lab work we're going to need $180, which I'm sure is a significant discount.

I'm sure there are multiple free clinics in their area and one of them would've worked with them on the price or a payment plan.

Nice the dad sounds like a real winner.

Robinson was also charged early this week with 16 counts including the rape and kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl in 2009. His arraignment is schedule for February 27.

I'm sure that's also the healthcare system's fault.

Hussing's sister, Shelia Slawinski, cried as she stood before the judge and gave voice to her nephew, Willie Robinson: "I am so in pain ... please take me to the doctor ... the last four weeks have been the most painful."

"I told my sister," Slawinski said. "I offered to help my sister."

According to the prosecution's pre-sentencing memo to the judge, at least eight family members noticed Willie's deteriorating health over a period of more than two years and most spoke to the couple about it. One relative described the boy's swollen neck glands as the size of a softball.

"Twenty-nine months he suffered," Slawinski said. "Twenty-nine months they had to do something and they chose not to."

Asked outside court why her sister hadn't taken care of Willie and hadn't enrolled him or three siblings in school, Slawinski said it was easier for Hussing to stay in bed during the day and do drugs. Both parents have abused drugs, their attorneys earlier told the judge.

wish I could find a pic

jesus christ DMC - are you off your meds again?

the clear message is that if your kids are sick - take them to the dr or the ER, they will treat/diagnose you even if you are poor

I agree ( Months with swollen glands and in pain ). There are thousands of places free clinics etc... Emergency room as stated above. These parents are shit and got what they deserve. Actually they deserve worse punishment IMO.

Based on that article they were wildly inept parents, negligent in the extreme, and prison is fair along with not "parenting" their existing children any longer. That is why they got 8 years, not because "they were poor".

All they had to do was take the kid to the ER. The ER would have had an obligation to treat and could have easily refered them to orgs that could have helped them.

Instead they choose to do nothing.

Oh and if you are poor, you have medicad(at the very least children of the poor do). So no, this has nothing to do with being poor and everything to do with being grossly negligent.

Yea cause your ass calling CPS is too much of a hassle.

Well, I think the parents were clearly negligent. However, I think we need to be careful about rushing to judgments. A lot of people in here are making the assumptions that cancer care is cheap or that it is easy to diagnose. It's not. Even finding a good oncologist can be difficult if you are in a rural area.

I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma for possibly 6-8 months before I felt sick enough to go to the doctor. I received an Xray that revealed something was seriously wrong. It still took two biopsies and about 2.5 weeks before a diagnosis was made. During this time I also received a bone marrow biopsy and an outpatient surgery to remove fluid build up near my lungs. Then it was six months of chemo and radiation. The total cost of my treatment was probably around $1.5 million, though honestly I have no real idea. Free clinics aren't going to offer the type of services needed to treat cancer. They are for the flu 😉 I highly doubt emergency room services will do the proper checks for cancer either, though in lymphoma's case an Xray will pick it up.

This reveals some of the major flaws in our health system, and we shouldn't brush them aside due to the rather sad nature of this particular case.

Cancer is a major problem for low income families simply because they often do not receive great routine care. Yes, Medicaid can help, but it can be very difficult finding a doctor who will take Medicaid. I discovered this myself after I finished treatment and went back to school. And the income limitations for Medicaid are incredibly stringent.

I think we need to be careful about rushing to judgements. If I recall correctly, a few years ago a religious family stopped bringing their child to chemo for Hodgkin's because they had religious objections. He got worse and eventually CPS intervened...ended up in court, created a big fuss.

Something doesn't jive. Rightwingers in this thread are saying these parents should be punished by the government for not buying medical care for their kid. Sounds like a mandate by the government for people to buy a product from a third party...

No.

Your response is retarded.

It is nothing like the government mandating anything.

A parent is required to feed and care for their children.
