so i put a bike rack on craigslist

Everyone is sending me to the same site with the following explanation....

"The rack is $105 here (link)....I'd buy it there, but I do not want to pay the $16 shipping and the tax...can I have it for <insert sub $105 amount here>. "

Well....then do not pay the $16 shipping and tax and just buy it from me for $115. One guy even said since I opened the box, I have no right to sell it more than $80. WTF people....the thing is new, unused, and spotless. A bike has never been on it and he acts like it has been used and abused.

people don't go to craigslist to buy stuff at retail prices, they go there to find deals.

sounds like these peopl can buy it brand new for $121 w/shipping and you are selling an openbox item for $115. not exactly an incentive to buy from you.

lowballing is part of craigslist, deal with it, it's a free service.

You're selling a used item for more than retail. No matter what you tell yourself, you open the box and it's used. If they buy from you they get no warranty, no reciept and no return policy. If you're selling on craigslist, you have to sell for substantially below retail. Sorry, but you're in the wrong.

it's below retail, not by much, but it is. I'll sell for $105 on the dot, but not $90. That $105 is that price b/c you have to pay $16 shipping. Everywhere else, with free shipping, has it for $120.

If you don't like the price, move on to the next listing. Why people waste their time emailing the seller about the price is beyond me.

Exactly. You could ask for $200. Maybe you'll find someone stupid enough to bite. You probably won't though.

Complain all you want about lowballers but if you never sell the bike rack it'll be because you refused to move on the price. The market will determine a fair price.

yeah, I understand haggling, but come on....they guy that emailed me about how i shouldn't sell it for more than $80 sent me a freaking page long email on why I shoudl sell it for less.
 
wait until they demand you deliver it or meet them 60 miles away near their house at 10pm when they get off work....
 
I sold something on CL for the first time this month that was way underpriced and it went quick (because I wanted to be rid of it and there wasnt much demand for it).

But there are way too many dirtbags on CL to make it a full time hobby. 🙁

Well it sounds like some people are being pricks about it, for example the guy who emailed OP and told him he has no right to sell it for more than $80. If you think the price is too high send the person a polite email with a lower offer. No need for crap like what that guy did, though.

And as others have pointed out, OP can ask whatever he wants for the item. Good luck selling an open box item at slightly less than retail, though. 😀

So I could get it new for $120 with a warranty and receipt from Amazon, or I could buy it from you for $121 with no warranty, no receipt, open box with only your word that you hadn't used it and it was in brand new condition... Hmmm.... I'd have to say, if that's the deal you're offering, you better hope that the stupidest rich guy on the planet stumbles across your ad. Only someone with more dollars than sense would think they were getting a good deal by going with you.

I'm having a problem (kinda) with a monitor I'm selling, the buyer wants to open it to make sure it works (it's sealed), but problem is, I don't want to do that since he could open it, test it, then say he doesn't want it, then I'd be stuck with an 'open' monitor which would drive the price down.
